Sheet pipe is a type of perforated pipe used for drainage designed initially for drainage but has the potential for sub-surface irrigation. The objectives of this study were to experiment and observe the performance of the sub-surface irrigation control system with sheet pipe. This investigation covered the observation of water table control and its effect on soil moisture. The detailed process of water flow during the setting of the water table was numerically modeled in 2 dimensions to observe the distribution of soil moisture, soil pressure, and flux. The results showed that the system successfully controlled the water table at the desired level in the experiment. The developed two-dimensional numerical simulation showed the distribution of soil moisture in the model center as a response to the water table increase, represented by the variable head. The soil wetting advances toward soil surface driven by the water table, which was increased gradually and reached saturation at the height of water table setpoint.

Drainage construction for plantations development on peatlands often caused controversy. Dranage construction will be followed by subsidence of peatland . To be able to extend the chance to get profit in the plantation business subsidence prevention efforts are needed. Setting water level and the prevention of excessive drainage is one of the efforts to reduce the rate of subsidence of the peat. This study is based on literature review by collecting information from various sources and then comparing and analyzing it so that information is obtained on a comprehensive subject matter. Literature review include: monitoring parameters, types of equipment for monitoring, pattern placement monitoring equipment, the range and the frequency of monitoring. From the study concluded that the water level necessary to measure on land and channels using dipwell and staff gauges. Observations were made with a combination of automated recording device and manual recording. Both are quite accurate, but the use of automatic registers in remote locations saves time, and if an automatic device is installed in an area that has the potential to have large water level fluctuations and runs quickly, it will provide more accurate data. Observations on dams for water level control are installed at every 20 cm drop in hidraulic head.

Overdrainaged phenomena on peat land after reclamated for agriculture area is indicated water management/water table control failure.  Water table depth of peat land on virgin forest that has been  reclamated is low (0.15 m) and this condition on Zamrud peat dome.  Water table dept on old reclamated peat land has better condition than peat land after new reclamated as plantation area. Peatland degradation showed overdrainage phenomena has potential happened on land clearing and  canal construction activity.  This condition have effected to water table dept  about 1 m. Overdrainaged impact on peatland has caused  fire of peatland.  For example this condition occured in  Siak Kecil peat dome and Kandis peat dome.  Keywords : peat dome, water table
