Demonstratives are used in all the world’s languages to establish joint attention between interlocutors. I have recently proposed that demonstratives further train speakers of different languages in spatial perspective taking by automatizing the computation of different relational values (e.g., the distance, familiarity or altitude of a referent) from different perspectives (the speaker’s, the listener’s or both) depending on the language. The present study starts by pointing out a common mis-analysis of the form ‘este’ in Spanish as a proximal demonstrative, when it is in fact used as a filler. I then report an online study (N=51) testing two alternative views of the Spanish demonstrative system: the distance-oriented view (according to which all Spanish demonstratives indicate relative distance from the speaker) vs the person-oriented view (according to which the proximal forms indicate proximity to the speaker, the medial forms indicate proximity to the listener and the distal forms indicate distance from both speaker and listener). The results of the study confirmed the person- oriented account, supporting the view that there is a fundamental distinction between near and far space in demonstrative use, with interactive factors (such as listener position) playing a role in far space.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to propose a theoretical framework to illustrate the archival knowledge applied by archivists in their personal archiving (PA) and the mechanism of the application of archival knowledge in their PA.Design/methodology/approachThe grounded theory methodology was adopted. For data collection, in-depth interviews were conducted with 21 archivists in China. Data analysis was performed using the open coding, axial coding and selective coding to organise the archival knowledge composition of PA and develops the awareness-knowledge-action (AKA) integration model of archival knowledge application in the field of PA, according to the principles of the grounded theory.FindingsThe archival knowledge involved in the field of PA comprises four principal categories: documentation, arrangement, preservation and appraisal. Three interactive factors involved in archivists' archival knowledge application in the field of PA behaviour: awareness, knowledge and action, which form a pattern of awareness leading, knowledge guidance and action innovation, and archivists' PA practice is flexible and innovative. The paper underscored that it is need to improve archival literacy among general public.Originality/valueThe study constructs a theoretical framework to identify the specialised archival knowledge and skills of PA which is able to provide solutions for non-specialist PA and develops an AKA model to explain the interaction relationships between awareness, knowledge and action in the field of PA.

PurposeThe significance of physician-user interaction has been widely acknowledged in offline and online healthcare consultation. However, limited attempts have been made to explore the influence of physician-user interaction on users' perceived service quality (PSQ) in the mobile context. Based on the literature on physician-user interaction and media synchronicity theory, this study proposes a theoretical model where the interactive factors common across the offline, online and mobile context, i.e. physicians' informational support and emotional support, the interactive factors unique in the mobile context, i.e. physicians' response speed and voice service, and the interaction between the two categories of interactive factors predict users' PSQ in mobile consultation.Design/methodology/approachThis study collects consultation records between 25,225 users and 738 physicians from a leading Chinese mobile consultation application, and employs linear regression to verify the proposed theoretical model.FindingsPhysicians' informational, emotional support, response speed and voice service are found to have significant positive impacts on users' PSQ. Besides, physicians' response speed strengthens the positive impacts of physicians' informational and emotional support on users' PSQ, while physicians' voice service weakens the positive link between physicians' informational support on users' PSQ.Originality/valueThis study contributes to the antecedents for users' PSQ in mobile consultation by identifying unique interactive factors in the mobile context, and highlighting the individual and interaction effects of different physician-user interactive factors. Besides, this study employs novel methods, which leverages text classification and text pattern recognition to more accurately depict physicians' online behaviors based on objective communication records.

Explainable Recommendation aims at not only providing the recommended items to users, but also making users aware why these items are recommended. Too many interactive factors between users and items can be used to interpret the recommendation in a heterogeneous information network. However, these interactive factors are usually massive, implicit and noisy. The existing recommendation explanation approaches only consider the single explanation style, such as aspect-level or review-level. To address these issues, we propose a framework (MSRE) of generating the multi-style recommendation explanation with the attention-guide walk model on affiliation relations and interaction relations in the heterogeneous information network. Inspired by the attention mechanism, we determine the important contexts for recommendation explanation and learn joint representation of multi-style user-item interactions for enhancing recommendation performance. Constructing extensive experiments on three real-world datasets verifies the effectiveness of our framework on both recommendation performance and recommendation explanation.

This qualitative study explored the experiences of new school counselors in establishing themselves as leaders in their schools. Specifically, it focused on factors this population perceives as promoting or impeding their role as leaders. We interviewed 12 participants in their first through third year as school counselors. Four themes emerged from the data including intrapersonal factors, sociocultural factors, systemic factors, and interactive factors. We discuss implications for counselor educators, district supervisors, and school counselors.
