Background: In the ophthalmological examination of a 1.5-year-old male dwarf Campbell hamster, who was examined with complaints of photophobia, pain, weakness and whitening of the eye color, hypermature cataract and chronic uveitis were observed in the left eye. Methods: Local antibiotic therapy was administered to the patient for the first ten days in order to eliminate a possible microbial agent. In addition, local NSAI drugs were applied to reduce pain and inflammation. Then, peros Prednol (methylprednisolone) was administered at a dose of 0.5 mg/kg for the first ten days and 1 mg/kg for the next ten days in order to suppress the inflammation associated with uveitis. The patient’s body weight and intraocular pressure were measured before the treatment. During the treatment, intraocular pressure values were checked every day. During this period, the patient was fed ad libitum at normal room temperature, in his own cage. Result: As a result of the treatment applied to the patient, who was followed up for more than a month, symptoms such as pain, photophobia and blepharospasm disappeared and the patient’s eating and drinking status improved compared to the past. However, increasing dose of Prednol did not have the expected effect on intraocular pressure values. Due to the very small size of the hamster eye in the treatment of hypermature cataracts, lens removal cannot be performed as easily as in other species.

Interspecies embryo transfer is a seldom-used method to increase the successful conservation of endangered species. The study aimed to determine the potential development of interspecies reconstructed embryos. The present study used two animal models, Campbell hamsters (Phodopus campbelli) and mice (Mus musculus). The isolated inner cell mass (ICM) of hamster embryos were injected into the mice embryos. The embryos were transferred to the pseudopregnant mice using non-surgery embryos transfer methods. The fetuses were collected at day 13.5 of gestation for morphometric measurement and cytochrome b (Cyt b) analysis which used to determine the species of obtained fetuses. The results showed that the viability, pregnancy rate, and embryonic implantation ability of the interpecies reconstructed embryos did not differ significantly (p>0.05) compared to non-reconstructed embryos. Morphometric measurement showed that the crown-rump (CR) and the weight of fetuses in the reconstructed group were significantly higher than non-reconstructed group (p<0.05). According to Cytb analysis, the species of obtained fetuses were mice, while the population of hamster cells were found only in the blighted ovum (resorption). Therefore, it can be concluded that interspecies reconstructed embryos are able to implant. However, the population of mice cells are only found to develop.

Pada studi kasus ini kami mendokumentasikan sebuah kasus prolapsus kantung pipi pada seekor hamster mini Campbell (Phodopus campbelli). Hamster mini Campbell datang dengan anamneses adanya sebuah massa di kiri mulut bagian dalam yang tampak menyembul keluar. Berdasarkan pemeriksaan klinis, hamster mengalami prolapsus kantung pipi dengan prognosa yang buruk. Terapi awal yang dilakukan berupa reposisi, akan tetapi terjadi prolaps kembali sehingga dilakukan amputasi pada kantung pipi yang mengalami prolap.

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of superovulation induction through Pregnant Mare’s Serum Gonadotropin (PMSG) and Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) injection to increased birth number in Campbell’s hamsters (Phodopus campbelli). This study used 10 unpregnant female Campbell’s hamster, aged 4-6 months, weighing of 25-30 grams. Hamsters were divided into K1 and K2, each consist of five hamsters. K1 injected with 1 ml physiologic NaCl, while K2 intraperitoneally injected with PMSG and hCG in 5 IU. Mating was held after injection. Male and female hamsters were put in one box with ration of 1:1. The observation of vagina plug was done in order to confirm whether the mating successes or not. The average amount of fetus birth through superovulation on K1 and K2 were 3.40±1.3 and 7.80±1.1, respectively. In conclusion, the superovulation induction using the combination of PMSG and hCG increase birth number on Campbell’s hamsters.
