Plants, which are the biggest source of natural dyes, have been used as coloring agents since the beginning of humanity. In this study, the usability of eastern groundsel, which is thought to be an alternative for the textile dyeing industry, especially for sustainable and renewable textile production, was investigated. Dyeing processes were performed with different concentrations of dyeing baths of natural dye which is extracted from the crowns of the eastern groundsel (Senecio vernalis) plant. After dyeing, dye flotte concentrations were determined using UV-visible spectrophotometer and the percent uptake of natural dye on cotton fabric was measured Spectrophotometric color analysis of the fabrics was performed and fastnesses of the samples were evaluated. It was found that the coloration of cotton fabrics with the use of Eastern groundsel (Senecio vernalis) in suitable dyeing application conditions could be managed with almost sufficient fastnesses.

Demand responsive transport (DRT) alternatives offer improved mobility to travellers through station-to-destination or door-to-transit operations. In particular, door-to-transit DRT service acts as a feeder to major public transport hubs, making public transport more accessible and attractive to travellers. This work aims to study the mode choice behaviour of travellers between their current modes and a new service, which is a combination of DRT and public transport. The study is conducted in the Northern Beaches area of Sydney, Australia where DRT is expected to serve as a feeder to the newly introduced express bus service called B-Line. A stated preference (SP) experiment is designed where multiple-choice scenarios involving two modes, status quo (SQ) and the new service (combined DRT and public transit), are presented to the participants. The survey uses trip specific information obtained from Google API to form the attributes for the new service. The collected data are analysed using a latent class choice model (LCCM), which segments the observed sample into distinct groups where each group has its own taste and preferences towards the new service option. Results from the study reveal that one of the identified user segments shows 96 percent uptake towards the new service option, while the other user segment shows an uptake of 44 percent. Results also show that individuals making work trips are more likely to opt for the new service. Findings from this study can provide information to urban planners regarding the market uptake of DRT services. Furthermore, the findings can also help planners in implementing segment specific policies aimed at further improving uptake towards DRT along with public transport.

Abstract

Bocconia frutescens is a small tree, has deeply lobed and serrated edge leaves, flowers are grouped in pendulous panicles terminal, seeds are shiny black with a fleshy covering of orange color. It is native to America, is known under their common names: Sarno, Palo Amarillo or Trompeto. Objectives: Evaluate the antioxidant activity of extracts and fractions of leaves Bocconia frutescens by DPPH• and ABTS•+ methods. Methods: the fractions obtained by Soxhlet with solvents of different polarity of leaves, were evaluated at concentrations of 25, 62.5, 125 and 250 mg / LMeOH to determine the antioxidant activity by DPPH• and ABTS•+ methods. Results: Extracts for the bleaching method DPPH• radical the Percent Uptake was between 47.6 and 57.7 to 250 mg / LMeOH and fractions between 45.4 and 54.1 mg / LMeOH, to 250 mg / LMeOH. By the method of coloration radical ABTS•+. Extracts for the percentage uptake was found between 89.7 and 99.7 and fractions between 68.5 and 99.6 mg / LMeOH, to 250 mg / LMeOH. Conclusions: The fractions of ethyl acetate and methanol have a high antioxidant activity to be evaluated by the ABTS•+ and DPPH• techniques, the technique ABTS•+ present higher sensitivity.

A greenhouse study was conducted to investigate the uptake, accumulation and percent recovery of N, P, K, Ca and Mg by sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) cv `TI-155', `Centennial', `Georgia Jet' and `Rojo Blanco'. These cultivars were grown in a fritted clay medium and harvested after 42 and 32 days. There were no significant difference in total elements uptake among the cultivars at 42 days. However, Georgia Jet accumulated more P and K than TI-155 and had higher levels of K than Rojo Blanco at day 82. Total accumulation of elements increased significantly from 42 to 82 days. Leaves accounted for most of the plant N at both harvest periods. Storage roots contained significantly more K than leaves, vines or fibrous roots. Percent N, P and K uptake was significantly lower at 42 than at 82 days. Cultivars also had no significant difference in percent uptake at day 42. However, at day 82, Georgia Jet showed a significantly higher P and K percent recovery than Rojo Blanco.
