This position paper looks at the 1964 AIA -ACSA Teacher conference, one that offers us a window into the current anxieties of architectural history survey courses. The conference was organized at a time when PhD programs in Architectural History and Theory were emerging, with accompanying mid-century notions of disciplines with clear boundaries, objects of study and hierarchy of experts. The questions that were being asked were fundamental: What is Architectural History? What are its contents? How should it be taught? Who is an Architectural Historian? However, a closer look beneath the masculine bravado of the conference reveals many of the same symptoms that persist today: questions of ‘diversity’ of content, anxiety to be ‘relevant’ to students in professional programs and a tendency to leave unquestioned the tradition of ‘designo’. This paper journeys through these anxieties with the hope of bringing some of those in play today into sharper focus. Perhaps, it concludes, the work of architectural history might be what Spivak termed as a project of “Planetarity”, involving not merely a change in epistemological methods but an undoing of the social order of architectural history.

In the context of postgraduate pedagogical education reform, transition to multi-level training of teachers, ensuring competitiveness of specialists in a reasonable labor market, issue of preparing future teachers for professional and pedagogical activities is very relevant.  Since the Republic of Kazakhstan joined ranks of independent States, changes in public awareness, along with all its areas have increased the requirements for the level of teachers’ professionalism, achievements in science and industry, and introduction of advanced technologies. In education of a person who meets the new requirements of society, as a factor in ensuring national security, we consider the training of creative teachers who think innovatively, make complex pedagogical decisions, formulate problems, and change their stereotypes. The research uses interview to collect data on the topic. The study discusses the benefits of the undergraduate, masters and PhD programs. This book provides guidance and tools to help PhD students and junior faculty members successfully navigate and mature through the various stages of an academic career. Senior faculty members can use this book as a source of ideas to advise their PhD students and junior colleagues. This book presents knowledge that is seldom imparted in PhD programs, and organizes the same as advice and tools related to achieving success at research, teaching and service, all while maintaining work-life balance. The advice and tools provided are based on years of experience of the author and guest contributors, who have successfully navigated many of the same challenges and mentored many PhD students and junior faculty members. This book is suitable both for those who seek careers in research universities or universities that promote greater balance across research, teaching and service.

ABSTRACT Most research on diversity within political methodology focuses on gender while overlooking racial and ethnic gaps. Our study investigates how race/ethnicity and gender relate to political science PhD students’ methodological self-efficacy, as well as their general academic self-efficacy. By analyzing a survey of 300 students from the top 50 US-based political science PhD programs, we find that race and ethnicity correlate with quantitative self-efficacy: students identifying as Black/African American and as Middle Eastern/North African express lower confidence in their abilities than white students. These gaps persist after accounting for heterogeneity among PhD programs, professional and socioeconomic status, and preferred methodological approach. However, small bivariate gender gaps disappear in multivariate analysis. Furthermore, gaps in quantitative self-efficacy may explain racial/ethnic disparities in students’ broader academic self-efficacy. We argue that the documented patterns likely lead to continued underrepresentation of marginalized groups in the political methodology student body and professoriate.

Purpose During the lengthy process of PhD studies, supervisory changes commonly occur for several different reasons, but their most frequent trigger is a poor supervisory relationship. Even though a change in supervisors is a formal bureaucratic process and not least the students’ rights, in practice it can be experienced as challenging. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to explore how doctoral students experience a change in supervisory arrangements. Design/methodology/approach This study highlights the voices of 19 doctoral students who experienced at least one supervisory change during their doctoral studies. Findings The findings were structured chronologically, revealing the students’ experiences prior, during and after the changes. In total, 12 main themes were identified. Most of the interviewed students experienced the long decision-making processes as stressful, difficult and exhausting, sometimes causing a lack of mental well-being. However, once the change was complete, they felt renewed, energized and capable of continuing with their studies. It was common to go through more than one change in supervisory arrangements. Further, the students described both the advantages of making a change yet also the long-lasting consequences of this change that could affect them long after they had completed their PhD programs. Originality/value The study fulfills an identified need to investigate the understudied perspective of doctoral students in the context of change in supervisory arrangements. A change in the academic culture is needed to make any changes in supervisory arrangements more acceptable thus making PhD studies more sustainable.

Abstract: This paper reports reflections of one of the courses I took in this semester namely Methodologies of Educational Research. To construct this paper, I used qualitative biographical-reflective method which is aligned with interpretive paradigm of narrative inquiry research methodology to describe my own experience in the learning process. The data I used were the postings from Zuvio mobile application designed for advising learning process with online platform and personal experience from reflective process of the course. I analyzed the data with three-stage qualitative data analysis: data reduction, data display, and conclusion. The findings report that the classroom undergone with classroom action research has successfully overcome the difficulty faced by professors and students at international PhD programs. The students were found to perceive positive attitudes towards the carefully selected instructions design of action research with Flipped-Jigsaw approach. The implications were also proposed. Abstrak: Artikel ini melaporkan refleksi dari salah satu mata kuliah yang saya ambil pada semester ini yaitu Metodologi Penelitian Pendidikan. Untuk menyusun makalah ini, saya menggunakan metode kualitatif biografis-reflektif yang selaras dengan paradigma interpretatif metodologi penelitian inkuiri naratif untuk menggambarkan pengalaman saya sendiri dalam proses pembelajaran. Data yang saya gunakan adalah postingan dari aplikasi mobile Zuvio yang dirancang untuk proses pembelajaran dengan platform online dan pengalaman pribadi dari proses reflektif kursus. Saya menganalisis data dengan tiga tahap analisis data kualitatif: reduksi data, penyajian data, dan penarikan kesimpulan. Temuan penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa kelas yang dilakukan dengan penelitian tindakan kelas telah berhasil mengatasi kesulitan yang dihadapi oleh profesor dan mahasiswa di program PhD internasional. Para siswa merasakan sikap positif terhadap desain instruksi penelitian tindakan yang dipilih dengan cermat dengan pendekatan Flipped-Jigsaw. Implikasinya juga diusulkan pada artikel ini.

The discipline of nursing is at a crossroads following the pandemic as scores of both budding and seasoned scholars and practitioners have left the discipline of nursing. Lower numbers of experienced nurses are entering into doctoral programs of nursing, especially PhD programs. A mentoring model is needed to guide and retain budding scholars of the discipline. The author of this article presents the humanbecoming mentorship model. It will be used to illustrate ethical straight-thinking implications for the future of the discipline of nursing.

This interview study of 50 biology PhD students with depression examines how aspects of graduate teaching and research affect depression and how depression affects students’ experiences teaching and researching. This work identifies aspects of graduate school that PhD programs can target to improve mental health among graduate students.
