Abstract In a previous study, an annular-array transducer was employed to characterize homogeneous scattering phantoms and excised rat livers using backscatter envelope statistics and frequency domain analysis. A sound field correction method was also applied to take into account the average attenuation of the entire scattering medium. Here, we further generalized the evaluation of backscatter coefficient (BSC) using the annular array in order to study skin tissues with a complicated structure. In layered phantoms composed of two types of media with different scattering characteristics, the BSC was evaluated by the usual attenuation correction method which revealed an expected large difference from the predicted BSC. In order to improve the BSC estimate, a correction method that applied the attenuation of each layer as a reference combined with a method that corrects based on the attenuation of the analysis position were applied. It was found that the method using the average attenuation of each layer is the most effective. This correction method is well adapted to the extended depth of field provided by an annular array.

Abstract To achieve fine visualization of the peripheral microvascular networks, we have developed a photoacoustic (PA) microscope equipped with a four-channel annular array transducer. The quality of PA images processed with Delay-and-Sum (DAS) method is degraded by off-axis signals. Thus, to achieve higher image quality for the PA microscope, this study evaluated the efficacy of the five coherence factor weighting methods: coherence factor, sign coherence factor, phase coherence factor, circular coherence factor, and vector coherence factor. Using PA signals acquired from a 100 µm microtube and the skin microvessels, we generated PA images with DAS and one of the weighting methods, and quantitatively evaluated the image quality by calculating the sharpness, contrast ratio, and contrast-to-noise ratio. The results showed the phase coherence factor and the vector coherence factor methods were more effective to clearly visualize the microvascular structure, in terms of vessel sharpening and noise suppression performances, than the other methods.

This study set out to examine associations among echotextural, physicochemical and sensory attributes of the pectoralis major muscles in 17-week-old organic turkeys (B.U.T. Big-6) varying in the amount of wheat and oat grain in daily feed rations (Group C: complete feed only; Group Exp1: 5–30% of wheat and 0–20% of oat; and Group Exp2: 5–50% of wheat and 0–50% of oat; n = 15 turkeys/group). Digital ultrasonograms of the left pectoral muscle in four different planes (longitudinal-L, transverse-T, and two oblique planes-O1 and O2) were obtained with a 5.0-MHz linear-array transducer just before slaughter. Mean numerical pixel intensity (MPI) and pixel heterogeneity (MPH) of the muscle parenchyma were computed using the ImageProPlus® analytical software. Ten significant correlations between echotextural attributes and various meat characteristics were recorded in Group C, one in Group Exp1, and eight in Group Exp2. When data were pooled for all birds studied, there were twelve significant correlations (p < 0.05); all but one correlation (between MPH and moisture) were for physical and sensory characteristics of meat samples. Computer-assisted analysis is a potential method to determine moisture as well as physical (e.g., coloration) and sensory (e.g., aroma) characteristics of pectoralis major muscles in organic turkeys.

To improve the transmission performance and preparation of a transducer array, two planar array transducers based on connected 1–3 piezoelectric composites as a matrix were designed. Each transducer contained 25 array elements with a gap of 1 mm between them. The length, width and height of each array element were 1 mm, 26 mm and 5 mm, respectively. Two kinds of array transducers were tested through finite element simulation and experiments. The array transducer prototype was fabricated based on two kinds of composite materials, and the fabrication cycle was short. Our results show that the maximum transmission voltage response of the two-phase 1–3 full array driver is up to 179 dB at 200–400 kHz and the acoustic radiation intensity can be increased by up to 22% compared with the traditional splicing transducer array. It is suitable for short-range target positioning and measurement. Moreover, in the single element mode, the beam of the three-phase 1–3 transducer has no sidelobe and a single element −3 dB beam width of up to 91°. Furthermore, the beam width of the two-phase 1–3 type is 54°, and the acoustic radiation breadth is improved by 40.6%. The three-phase 1–3 type array transducer has the characteristics of concentrated acoustic transmission energy of the whole array, and its −3 dB beam width is 3.5°. The beam width decreased by 12.5%, indicating that the three-phase 1–3 type transducer is suitable for short-range target detection and perception. The two array transducers have their own advantages in transmitting the voltage response and beam width, which must be selected on the basis of the requirements of practical applications.
