Current levels of meat consumption in Western societies are unsustainable and contribute to the climate emergency. However, most people are not planning to reduce their intake. Here, we examine the language used on social media to describe meat and plant-based foods, since the ways people think and communicate about food could hinder the transition towards sustainable eating. We analysed the degree to which the language in food posts reflects eating simulations, which have been found to be associated with desire for foods. In two studies, we analysed the words used in Instagram post caption text (NStudy1 = 682) and hashtags (NStudy1 = 852; NStudy2 = 3104). As hypothesised, meat posts contained more eating simulation words than plant-based and vegetarian posts, which instead contained more health and identity words. This pattern may reflect polarization surrounding sustainable foods, which may hinder the shift towards plant-based diets needed to curb climate change.

Internet memes are phenomena that rapidly gain popularity on the Internet which construct intercultural discourse. Using visual rhetoric, the Internet memes convey a set of symbols and ideals that express socio-political structure represented on the Internet. The story of memes is crucial in understanding the digital culture along with revealing the identity of an Internet subculture, as well as in analyzing the impacts of this cultural artifact. This study analyzes the nature and functions of internet memes and its contribution to formulate a new cultural discourse. The findings have been instrumented to illustrate how memes operate as rhetoric to explore the intercultural communication and identity construction prevalent in representative cyber-culture. It has specially been targeted to inquire the inter-textual nature of memes which are created and disseminated by the Bangladeshi Facebook prosumers. In addition, the study makes a comparison of theoretical approaches to the study of memes, including visual rhetoric approach which combines elements of the semiotic and discursive approaches to study the persuasive constituents of visual texts. These methods help deconstruct a sign or a text and decode possible hidden meanings through discourse analysis in terms of written texts and through semiotic analysis in terms of images. The presence of both an image (sign) and a caption (text) in an internet meme requires such a combined approach for reflective output.

Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan bentuk dan fungsi bahasa slang pada teks keterangan foto akun Lambe Turah di media sosial instagram.. Metode pengumpulan data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode simak dengan teknik lanjutan, yaitu teknik catat. Metode analisis datanya menggunakan metode padan intralingual dan ekstralingual. Hasil analisis data disajikan dengan metode formal dan informal. Berdasarkan hasil analisis data, ditemukan bentuk dan fungsi bahasa slang dalam teks keterangan foto akun instagram Lambe Turah. Bentuk bahasa slang Lambe Turah meliputi bentuk kata, frase, klausa, dan kalimat. Fungsi bahasa slang Lambe Turah terdiri dari fungsi personal, fungsi direktif, fungsi fatik, fungsi referensial, dan fungsi imaginatif. Abstract: This study aims to describe the form and function of slang in the photo caption text of Lambe Turah's Instagram account on social media. The data collection method used in this study was the observation method with advanced techniques, namely the note taking technique. Methods of data analysis using intralingual and extralingual matching methods. The results of data analysis were presented using formal and informal methods. Based on the results of data analysis, it was found the form and function of slang in the caption text of Lambe Turah's Instagram account. The slang form of Lambe Turah includes the form of words, phrases, clauses and sentences. Lambe Turah slang functions consist of personal functions, directive functions, fatigue functions, referential functions, and imaginative functions.

Menulis merupakan salah satu keterampilan yang sangat penting dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris. Pembelajaran menulis juga tidak dapat dipisahkan dari peran media dan kecanggihan teknologi yang berkembang secara dinamis. Instagram sebagai salah satu media sosial dapat menjadi salah satu alternatif dan inovasi bagi guru untuk meningkatkan keterampilan menulis. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah meningkatkan keterampilan menulis caption text dengan menggunakan Instagram. Penelitian ini dilakukan di SMK Negeri Kabuh, Jombang pada semester ganjil tahun pelajaran 2020/2021. Subjek penelitian adalah siswa kelas XII Kimia Industri 3 yang berjumlah 36 siswa. Desain penelitian ini adalah Penelitian Tindakan Kelas (PTK). Instrument penelitian yang digunakan yaitu soal tes keterampilan menulis caption text, lembar observasi, serta dokumentasi. Tes dilakukan di pre siklus, siklus satu, dan siklus dua. Dalam menganalisis data, peneliti menggunakan teknik kuantitatif dan kualitatif. Data kuantitatif diperoleh dari hasil tes menulis. Sementara data kualitatif diperoleh dari hasil pengamatan aktivitas guru dan siswa serta dokumentasi. Berdasarkan hasil pengamatan, siswa terlihat lebih antusias dalam mengikuti kegiatan pembelajaran. Hasil dokumentasi dari teks yang dihasilkan oleh siswa menunjukkan adanya peningkatan pada kualitas tulisan. Penelitian tindakan kelas dikatakan sukses ketika siswa telah mencapai nilai kriteria ketuntasan minimal (KKM) yaitu 70 dan mencapai ketuntasan klasikal yaitu 75%. Setelah menggunakan Instagram, hasil menunjukkkan terjadi peningkatan keterampilan menulis caption text. Ketuntasan secara klasikal dalam pre tes, siklus 1, dan siklus 2 meningkat mulai dari 39%, 64%, dan 86%. Dengan demikian, hipotesis tindakan diterima atau dapat disimpulkan bahwa penggunaan media Instagram mampu meningkatkan keterampilan siswa dalam menulis caption text.

Abstract Background Forty-two percent of high school teens in Hawai'i have tried e-cigarettes, double the United States' national average. Native Hawaiians have higher use than other racial/ethnic groups. While Hawai'i state law prohibits tobacco sales to anyone under 21, many Hawai'i adolescents purchase e-cigarettes on the internet, often through social media. Methods We collected 717 public Instagram posts from April and December 2018 geotagged in Hawai'i that mentioned one or more hashtag search terms (e.g., #vape, #ecig). All relevant, working posts (n = 476) were manually coded for text and image characteristics. Results Over 80% of posts were from vape shops (n = 389 of 476;81.7%). Caption text commonly mentioned brand names (n = 409;85.9%), vape shop names (n = 379;79.6%), and flavors (n = 103;21.6%). The most frequent image elements were logos (n = 395;82.7%), e-cigarettes (n = 324;68.1%), and flavors (n = 110;23.1%). Less than one in 50 (n = 9;1.8%) included caption text warnings. One in five posts (n = 94,19.7%%) featured content specific to Hawai'i including references to Native Hawaiian culture, flavors and foods, scenery, plants, animals, and language. For example, “Hawai'i Nei...Stay Blessed n Vape With Aloha” or “Ma'o Hau Hele” is the state flower of Hawaii, combined with a refreshing sweet raspberry it makes the perfect balance of flavor.” User engagement (i.e., likes) varied, with a median of 17 likes per post (range: 0-308). Posts with Hawaiian cultural elements received significantly more likes than other posts (median: 22 versus 16;p=0.0047). Conclusions Culture is a critical strength that can support positive health outcomes in many communities. Vape shops and product promoters explicitly misappropriated Native Hawaiian culture to sell e-cigarettes on Instagram, while downplaying known harms. Adolescents and young adults may be particularly vulnerable given social media's role as a powerful health behavior influence and an e-cigarette purchasing source. Key messages Health misinformation is contextualized within culture and place in a way that is compelling to users, may put youth at particular risk, and can perpetuate health disparities. Our study supports tailored health campaigns and interventions for local communities and cultures to combat such online misinformation.


Text Detection from natural scene images and videos is imperative for applications in real world domain analysis. However the text detection process isperplexingbecause of exigent scenarios that the text exhibit. The information present in the video is either perceptual or it is either in semantic form. Amongst the different content that exists in the video, the text information is a major important content that describes more about the nature of the video. The text present in the video can be categorized into Caption text and Scene text. The caption text is the artificial text that is easy to detect while scene text are natural text which is difficult to identify. In this paper text extraction in natural images by edge based method is implemented. The algorithms are estimated with a set of images of natural scenes that differ alongside the scope of font size, illumination, scale and text direction. Precision, accuracy and recall rates are determined to evaluate the performance. The proposed system worked for all difficult scenarios of varied text and gave better results than the existing methods.
