The twin-screw pump is designed for pumping highly viscous materials in the food industry. Rheological characteristics of materials are important in the specification of design parameters of screw pumps. Analysis of flow in the twin-screw pumps with definition of non-newtonian materials can be made by numerical modelling. CFD generally oriented software ANSYS Fluent and ANSYS Polyflow has been used for modelling. In this study those software’s (ANSYS Fluent and ANSYS Polyflow) were defined for solution of flow in the twin-screw pumps. Results were compared for the same boundary conditions on the inlet and outlet of the 3D model. For definition of the viscosity were used the Nonnewtonian power law. Parameters as consistency coefficient and flow exponent for Nonnewtonian power law were analysed by software ANSYS Fluent and ANSYS Polyflow. Postprocessing form ANSYS Fluent and ANSYS Polyflow were made by contours of field and by graphs.

Abstract. This paper presents a method named 3D-GAN, based on a generative adversarial network (GAN), to retrieve the total mass, 3D structure and the internal mass distribution of snowflakes. The method uses as input a triplet of binary silhouettes of particles, corresponding to the triplet of stereoscopic images of snowflakes in free fall captured by a Multi-Angle Snowflake Camera (MASC). 3D-GAN is trained on simulated snowflakes of known characteristics whose silhouettes are statistically similar to real MASC observations and it is evaluated by means of snowflake replicas printed in 3D at 1 : 1 scale. The estimation of mass obtained by 3D-GAN has a normalized RMSE (NRMSE) of 40 %, a mean normalized bias (MNB) of 8 % and largely outperforms standard relationships based on maximum size and compactness. The volume of the convex hull of the particles is retrieved with MNRSE of 35 % and MNB of +19 %. In order to illustrate the potential of 3D-GAN to study snowfall microphysics and highlight its complementarity with existing retrieval algorithms, some application examples and ideas are provided, using as showcases the large available datasets of MASC images collected worldwide during various field campaigns. The combination of mass estimates (from 3D-GAN) and hydrometeor classification or riming degree estimation (from independent methods) allows for example to obtain mass-to-size power law parameters stratified on hydrometeor type or riming degree. The parameters obtained in this way are consistent with previous findings, with exponents overall around 2 and increasing with the degree of riming.

Peer production online communities are groups of people that collaboratively engage in the building of common resources such as wikis and open source projects. In such communities, participation is highly unequal: few people concentrate the majority of the workload, while the rest provide irregular and sporadic contributions. The distribution of participation is typically characterized as a power law distribution. However, recent statistical studies on empirical data have challenged the power law dominance in other domains. This work critically examines the assumption that the distribution of participation in wikis follows such distribution. We use statistical tools to analyse over 6,000 wikis from Wikia/Fandom, the largest wiki repository. We study the empirical distribution of each wiki comparing it with different well-known skewed distributions. The results show that the power law performs poorly, surpassed by three others with a more moderated heavy-tail behavior. In particular, the truncated power law is superior to all competing distributions, or superior to some and as good as the rest, in 99.3% of the cases. These findings have implications that can inform a better modeling of participation in peer production, and help to produce more accurate predictions of the tail behavior, which represents the activity and frequency of the core contributors. Thus, we propose to consider the truncated power law as the distribution to characterize participation distribution in wiki communities. Furthermore, the truncated power law parameters provide a meaningful interpretation to characterize the community in terms of the frequency of participation of occasional contributors and how unequal are the group of core contributors. Finally, we found a relationship between the parameters and the productivity of the community and its size. These results open research venues for the characterization of communities in wikis and in online peer production.

This work was intended to determine the effect of okra gum in combination with various starches on the flow and sensory properties of nonfat set yogurt. The selected starches include potato (PS), sweet potato (SPS), corn (CO), chickpea (CP), and Turkish beans (TB). The control is the yogurt prepared with okra gum only. Samples were analyzed under optimum conditions for their shear viscosity, viscoelasticity, texture, wheying-off, and sensory evaluation. Tests were performed at the beginning of the cold storage and after 7 or 15 days. By adding 1.0% starch, significant (p<0.05) reduction in wheying-off and firmer yogurt was obtained. Variations in the properties of yogurt were obvious and can be attributed to starch origin and amylose content. Therefore, the qualities of yogurts with tuber starches (PS and SPS) were different compared to corn or legume starches (CP and TB). The effect of the starches on yogurt properties changed over storage time, where some starches performed better only at the beginning of the storage period, and steady pH was maintained throughout the storage time. Wheying-off was significantly reduced irrespective of the origin of the starch. Sensory evaluation showed preference for yogurts prepared with starch compared to the control, regardless of starch type. Nonetheless, CP was preferred over other starches with respect to wheying-off, power law parameters, and overall acceptability.

AbstractThe coffee berry borer (CBB), Hypothenemus hampei Ferrari, a recent invader to Hawaii, is impacting coffee growers by reducing yields and quality and increasing production costs. Monitoring strategies are needed to assess infestations and where control operations are warranted, and evaluate their effectiveness. To develop and validate a fixed-precision sequential sampling plan, an intensive CBB sampling programme was conducted in 17 small farms in Kona and Kau districts in the Big Island in 2016/17. At each location, 30 trees/ha were monitored at 2–4 week intervals. Results show that the CBB has an aggregated spatial distribution based on Taylor's power law parameters. According to Green's stop line formula, between 6 and 50 coffee branches per ha (sample unit) are required to estimate infestation rates of 1.5–2.5% infested green berries (suggested economic threshold) with a precision fixed at 10 to 25%. Concurrently, a modified strategy was tested on 14 farms, in which only infested green berries (not total) was counted. The standard and modified sampling methods were highly correlated (R2 ≥ 0.98), while the modified approach required on average only 35 min (27% less time) to complete, with an additional 24 min taken to observe the position of the CBB inside the berry. Our data also show that berry infestation rates of CBB prior to harvest were a good predictor of the total defects resulting in processed green coffee from these farms (Pearson's r coefficient of 0.82). Our findings support improved sampling for the CBB under Hawaiian conditions using a simpler and faster monitoring strategy based on counting green infested berries.

Abstract The modification of castor oil (CO) with lignin was the focus of this research to create a lubricating medium with improved gel-like properties. Namely, an alkali lignin (L) was epoxidized with epichlorohydrin (EP) and the resulting LEPs were dispersed in CO. The parameters of LEP synthesis were varied and the epoxidation index (EPI) of the LEPs was determined. The LEPs were also submitted to thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Rheological responses of the LEP/CO dispersions were investigated through small-amplitude oscillatory shear (SAOS) tests. Linear viscoelasticity functions are quantitatively affected by the epoxidation parameters, such as temperature, reaction time and L/EP and L/NaOH ratios. In general, lignins with higher EPI show higher values of the SAOS functions, which are indicative of better gel-strength due to a higher cross-linking density between the LEPs and CO. A power-law equation describes well the evolution of the complex modulus, G*, with frequency of gel-like dispersions, where the power-law parameters were found to increase almost linearly with the EPI. The thermo-rheological characterization provides a softening temperature beyond 50°C.
