The article is devoted to the insufficiently studied problem of using intermedial analysis for studying the Gothic tradition in the literature of Russian symbolism (on the example of V. Brusov’s and F. Sologub’s works). We focus our attention on transition a visual image or a medieval art motive from one sign system to another. We analyze how medieval cultural categories correspond to the chronotope and figurative system in the Gothic novels of the 18th - early 19th century. It is concluded that the Symbolists refer to the visual images of the Gothic novel not only as elements of tradition, but also as categories of the culture of the Middle Ages.

The article is devoted to the problem of a communicative event in the drama. In the study, the text of the play is considered as a space of interaction between the minds of the author, reader and hero. The author of the article proves that one of the conditions for organizing a communicative event is the emergence of a “commentator” - a stage directions subject, and the result is the detection of specific ethical and value positions of the modern playwright and their reader. The work defines the features of the «commentator» which their role as an organizer of a communicative event depends on. The research material is the play by the Petersburg playwright Asya Voloshina «Gogol’s Overcoat» and the performances of the Nahum Orlov Drama Theatre (Chelyabinsk) and the St. Petersburg theater «TSEKH».

Grishkovetz’s novel «Asphalt» - genuine self-realization, contradictions between the external canvas of the life of a «successful person» and the absence of a true meaningful filling of it, corresponding to the deep internal needs of the individual. Three important aspects of comprehension the declared problem have been identified - dramatic, tragic and comic. The type of a «hero of our time» presented in the novel «Asphalt» is analyzed in relation to the traditions of the prose of writers - «forty-year-olds» and the «ambivalent» hero characteristic of their work.

In the article there is carried out a structural-semantic analysis of Mandelstam’s poem “Tell me, Desert Draftsman…”. Interpretation of a number of mysterious fragments is suggested. In particular, this concerns “Judaic troubles”. We argue that in this context they are connected with the motif of scattering because of the wind activity. We also find interlingual interference between Russian and French. Its meaning is related to the motifs of mutual metamorphosis and inseparability of entities typical of primary chaos. The key feature of the world embodied in the poem consists in the impossibility of unambiguous separation to opposite entities such as creator and destroyer, creation and annihilation, linear and cyclic processes, etc. In this case, no cosmos creates from chaos, the world remains “not embodied”.

This article analyzes the essay «Either-or» by the Danish thinker S. Kierkegaard. The musicality is an important feature of this work. The author attempts to combine the languages of music and prose, and a unique philosophical and literary text is born on the border of two types of art. Kierkegaard considered Mozart’s opera «Don Giovanni» as the pinnacle of musical creativity. Through the character of Don Juan, the philosopher recreates the type of aesthetic personality in the spirit of romanticism and shows the vulnerability of the romantic worldview. «Either-or» includes works written in different genres and reflecting opposing attitudes in life. This feature of narration can be compared with the phenomenon of polyphonism in music.
