Purpose: To determine the clinical characteristics of the chronic dacryocystitis and the success rate of external dacryocystorhinostomy. Methods: The retrospective, interventional study without comparing on 27 patients (32 eyes) of chronic dacryocystitis who underwent dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) from 2010 to 2011. Results were evaluated with standards: epiphora, purelence, lacrimal duct irrigation. Results: Over period of 6 months, 27 patients including 25 (92.59%) female, 2 (7.41%) male. The mean age was 49.8 years (range, 22-79 years). All patients demonstrated epiphera (range, 3 months – 11 years). Dacryocystorhinostomy was performed unilaterally in 81.48%, bilateral 18.52%. Successrate was 90.06% overall. Conclusions: Although techniques in dacryocystorhinostomy of DUPUY-DUTEMPS is old, its result is mainstay of treatment for chronic dacryocystitis in Vietnam. Key words: Dupuy-Dutemps, chronic dacryocystitis

ABSTRACT Sinonasal hemangiopericytoma are unusual tumors that develop from pericytes. We present a unique case of sinonasal hemangiopericytoma of inferior turbinate which presented with chronic dacryocystitis. Patient usually present with nasal obstruction, epistaxis, mass, headache, pain, discharge. But, chronic dacryocystitis is very unusual presentation. Objectives - to compare the condition of the nasal cavity after a dacryocystorhinostomy of external and endonasal access. Material and methods. Comparative assessment of the results of the study of 96 patients with chronic dacryocystitis was done. The patients were divided into 2 groups: group 1 included persons who underwent the videoendoscopic endonasal dacryocystorhinostomy; group 2 - patients with external dacryocystorhinostomy. For all the participants, there were registered the complaints and anamnesis, the data of video-endoscopy of the nasal cavity, anterior active rhinomanometry, transport and olfactory functions. The information on the state of the nasal cavity after surgery in the vertical section of the lacrimal ducts was also obtained. Results. In both groups we revealed the changes in the mucous membrane, in the anatomical structures of the nasal cavity, in the mobility of the ciliated epithelium, respiratory functions and olfaction. When comparing the results in both groups, the statistically significant differences were found in the questionnaire data - a complaint of lacrimation, and the data on the mucociliary clearance disorders (p

The urgency of improving the effectiveness of dacryocystitis treatment is determined by: their stable proportion among eye diseases, a high percentage of post−traumatic, iatrogenic and chronic forms, ability to be a source of dangerous complications and social significance. Existing anatomical and physiological relations and values of rhinogenic factors determine the involvement of otolaryngologists in dacryocystitis treatment. In order to determine the characteristics of the contingent of patients with dacryocystitis, structure of rhinogenic factors, methods of examination, surgical treatment and principles of postoperative management of patients, a study was conducted with 107 patients with chronic disease. The clinical effectiveness in diagnosis and planning of surgical intervention of the combination of endonasal optical rhinoscopy, probing and contrast of the nasolacrimal pathway with triombrast with subsequent radiological and (or) CT examination was determined. It is shown that the correction of endonasal structures should be performed simultaneously with dacryocystorhinostomy. The efficiency of the classical West−Bokstein surgery has been determined, the necessity of an individual approach to its planning has been shown. The main tasks of each stage of the surgery, which significantly affect its outcome, are established. When performed correctly, the effectiveness of "plastic" and "simple" rhinostomy, management of patients with and without stenting is almost the same. It has been proven that the use of radio wave and shaver techniques can greatly simplify the stages of the surgery and improve healing. Based on the obtained results, a conclusion was made about the expediency of involving an otolaryngologist in the consultation of patients with chronic dacryocystitis in each case. The criterion for choosing treatment tactics in favor of endonasal endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy is the presence of rhinogenic factors of dacryocystitis. Key words: dacryocystitis, endonasal endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy, rhinogenic factors, stenting, surgical treatment, epiphora, lacrimation.

Atrophic rhinitis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the nose, which is more common in India. Chronic dacryocystitis is its rare complication. The authors found four cases of chronic dacryocystitis from March 2002 to October 2003 due to atrophic rhinitis. It was diagnosed clinically by the regurgitation test and lacrimal syringing. These cases were treated conservatively for a period of six weeks to make the nasal mucosa healthier and were then subjected to endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy (end-DCR) under local anaesthesia. The procedure was found to be more difficult due to bleeding and the healing time was prolonged as compared to other cases of end-DCR. After one to one and half years of follow-up the primary success rate was 75 per cent but after revision surgery in one case, all cases were successful. Hence it was concluded that atrophic rhinitis is no more a contraindication for end-DCR. However, meticulous initial preparation and post-operative follow-up is necessary to improve the result.

Abstract Saksenaea erythrospora is a rare pathogen in humans. Ten adult cases have been previously reported, eight manifested with cutaneous infection, and two presented with invasive rhinosinusitis infection. The authors present a 16-month-old boy with progressive painful mass at the right medial canthus and upper cheek that was unresponsive to broad-spectrum antibiotics. He underwent an anterior orbitotomy and biopsy. Histopathology revealed broad nonseptate sterile hyphae and grew S. erythrospora, which was confirmed by molecular techniques. The patient was treated with intravenous liposomal amphotericin B and oral itraconazole combined with aggressive surgical debridement. The patient made a complete recovery without long-term complications at 4 months of follow-up. Primary cutaneous mucormycosis caused by S. erythrospora may rarely involve the periocular region and mimic chronic dacryocystitis. We report the first case of pediatric periocular cutaneous mucormycosis caused by S. erythrospora.
