The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of anatomical characteristics on the adhesion performance of Vatairea sp., Paulownia sp., Aspidosperma populifolium and Tectona grandis wood. Specimens for anatomical, physical and mechanical analyzes were produced from tangentially oriented boards. The treatments were joint glued from pieces of the same anatomical orientation (radial and tangential), evaluated for shear strength and glue line failure. The Vatairea sp wood had the highest specific gravity (0.74 g cm-3) and the Paulownia sp (0.34 g cm-3) wood was smaller. Aspidosperma populifolium species showed the highest shear strength in the glue line in the tangential and radial faces. The anatomical variables with higher influence on the wood adhesion process were pith ray cells and especially fibers that exhibit the greatest correlation with the shear strength of the glue line.

Abstract Adhesion between rubber and brass-coated steel cords is enhanced by using resins as adhesion promoters. Experiments were carried out using a squalene liquid rubber modeling approach to study the effect of resins on the chemistry of the vulcanization reaction. The formation of new intermediates during vulcanization and changes in chemical concentrations with reaction time was studied using Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC) analysis of the reacted squalene mixtures. Also, the effect of presence of resins on the surface of sulfidized brass cords was studied by analyzing the adhesion layer's elemental composition using the Electron Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDX) and Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS) characterization techniques. The changes in surface morphology of the adhesion layer with reaction time was noted by taking micrographs using the Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) technique. In this paper, a new mechanism is proposed for the role of resins in the improvement of initial and aged adhesion performance between rubber and brass-coated steel tire cords.

AbstractTrichomonas vaginalisis one of the most widespread, sexually transmitted pathogens. The infection involves a morphological switch from a free-swimming pyriform trophozoite to an amoeboid cell upon adhesion to host epithelial cells. While details on how the switch is induced and to what proteins of the host surface the parasite adheres remain poorly characterized, several surface proteins of the parasite itself have been identified as potential candidates. Among those are two expanded protein families that harbor domains that share similarity to functionally investigated surface proteins of prokaryotic oral pathogens; these are the BspA proteins of Bacteroidales and Spirochaetales, and the Pmp proteins of Chlamydiales. We sequenced the transcriptomes of five Trichomonads and screened for the presence of BspA and Pmp domain-containing proteins and tested the ability of individualT. vaginaliscandidates to mediate adhesion. Here we demonstrate that (i) BspA and Pmp domain-containing proteins are specifically expanded inT. vaginalisin comparison to other Trichomonads, and that (ii) individual proteins of both families have the ability to increase adhesion performance in a non-virulentT. vaginalisstrain andTetratrichomonas gallinarum, a parasite usually known to infect birds but not humans. Our results initiate the functional characterization of these two broadly distributed protein families, whose origin we trace back to the origin of Trichomonads themselves.
