This chapter reproduces the theory of degeneration data for polarized abelian varieties, following D. Mumford's 1972 monograph, An analytic construction of degenerating abelian varieties over complete rings, as well as the first three chapters of the Degeneration of abelian varieties (1990), by G. Faltings and C.-L. Chai. Although there is essentially nothing new in this chapter, some modifications have been introduced to make the statements compatible with a certain understanding of the proofs. Moreover, since Mumford and Faltings and Chai have supplied full details only in the completely degenerate case, this chapter balances the literature by avoiding the special case and treating all cases equally.

Abstract We present an analytic construction of multi-brane solutions with any integer brane number in cubic open string field theory (CSFT) on the basis of the ${K\!Bc}$ algebra. Our solution is given in the pure-gauge form $\Psi=U{Q_\textrm{B}} U^{-1}$ by a unitary string field $U$, which we choose to satisfy two requirements. First, the energy density of the solution should reproduce that of the $(N+1)$-branes. Second, the equations of motion (EOM) of the solution should hold against the solution itself. In spite of the pure-gauge form of $\Psi$, these two conditions are non-trivial ones due to the singularity at $K=0$. For the $(N+1)$-brane solution, our $U$ is specified by $[N/2]$ independent real parameters $\alpha_k$. For the 2-brane ($N=1$), the solution is unique and reproduces the known one. We find that $\alpha_k$ satisfying the two conditions indeed exist as far as we have tested for various integer values of $N\ (=2, 3, 4, 5, \ldots)$. Our multi-brane solutions consisting only of the elements of the ${K\!Bc}$ algebra have the problem that the EOM is not satisfied against the Fock states and therefore are not complete ones. However, our construction should be an important step toward understanding the topological nature of CSFT, which has similarities to the Chern–Simons theory in three dimensions.

North Saami is replacing the use of possessive suffixes on nouns with a morphologically simpler analytic construction. Our data (>2K examples culled from >.5M words) track this change through three generations, covering parameters of semantics, syntax and geography. Intense contact pressure on this minority language probably promotes morphological simplification, yielding an advantage for the innovative construction. The innovative construction is additionally advantaged because it has a wider syntactic and semantic range and is indispensable, whereas its competitor can always be replaced. The one environment where the possessive suffix is most strongly retained even in the youngest generation is in the Nominative singular case, and here we find evidence that the possessive suffix is being reinterpreted as a Vocative case marker.

Abstract This essay has the goal of thinking about the importance of the observation in the social research through the critics of the idea that observation constitute a neutral objective practice. The objectivity answers to an analytic construction placed within the reference background of the observer. In this sense, the observation is always an interpretation determined by the context of knowledge production which comes from the reality but questionning it and changing the fact in a piece of information.Key words: Observation, Participant observation, Exogenous observation, Endogenous observation, Self observation.
