Extension services as key determining factor for adoption of minimum tillage practice in Kenya: A plot level analysis

Purpose The adoption of climate-smart agricultural practices (CSAPs) is important for sustaining Indian agriculture in the face of climate change. Despite considerable effort by both national and international agricultural organizations to promote CSAPs in India, adoption of these practices is low. This study aims to examine the elements that affect the likelihood and intensity of adoption of multiple CSAPs in Bihar, India. Design/methodology/approach The probability and intensity of adoption of CSAPs are analyzed using multivariate and ordered probit models, respectively. Findings The results show significant correlations between multiple CSAPs, indicating that their adoptions are interrelated, providing opportunities to exploit the complementarities. The results confirm that both the probability and intensity of adoption of CSAPs are affected by numerous factors, such as demographic characteristics, farm plot features, access to market, socio-economics, climate risks, access to extension services and training. Farmers who perceive high temperature as the major climate risk factor are more likely to adopt crop diversification and minimum tillage. Farmers are less likely to adopt site-specific nutrient management if faced with short winters; however, they are more likely to adopt minimum tillage in this case. Training on agricultural issues is found to have a positive impact on the likelihood and the intensity of CSAPs adoption. Practical implications The major policy recommendations coming from of our results are to strengthen local institutions (public extension services, etc.) and to provide more training on CSAPs. Originality/value By applying multivariate and ordered probit models, this paper provides some insights on the long-standing discussions on whether farmers adopt CSAPs in a piecemeal or in a composite way.

Tillage system is one of the factors that influences crop yield. The aim of the research was to determine the influence of the basic tillage systems on the change in soil fertility, yield and quality of corn grain in the soil and climatic conditions of the central zone of the Krasnodar Territory. The surveys were conducted in 2018–2020 on the experimental fields of the FSBSO “National Center of Grain named after P. P. Lukyanenko”. Soil – chernozems leached. All the experiments were carried out according to the standard methodology. In a stationary experiment, observations were performed to study several tillage practices: conventional tillage (25 cm depth plowing), mulch tillage with soil decompaction (reduced tillage done with a chisel plow to a depth of 32 cm for row crops), mulch tillage (deep tillage is excluded, disking to a depth of 10 cm twice or thrice is used instead). Plowing to a 25 cm depth improves the bulk of the soil in the 0–30 cm layer. However, chiseling to a depth of 32 cm and disking to a depth of 10 cm twice or thrice caused soil compaction. Standard tillage practice led to a decrease in the number of agronomically valuable aggregates (61.1 %) and their water resistance (59.4 %) compared to soil decompaction and minimum-tillage systems. The highest rates of productive moisture reserves were on the plots with traditional tillage and decompaction (140.6 and 141.5 mm, respectively, which is 14.7 % higher compared to the minimum mulching). The studied soil cultivation systems did not affect “1000-grain weight” but significantly affected the yield of grain from one ear (124.3 g) and the number of formed ears per one plant (1.04 pcs.). The corn yield on the fields with traditional and decompaction tillage methods was 56.9 and 55.9 c/ha, respectively; on minimum-tillage system, it decreased by 4.8 %. Protein content in grain harvested from the plots with traditional tillage practice was 11.4 %, which is higher compared to the minimum-tillage system. No significant differences were detected for crude ash and dry matter.

39 ilçesiyle Türkiye’nin en büyük nüfusuna sahip ili İstanbul aynı zamanda Türkiye’nin en çok iç göç alan şehridir. Özellikle kırdan kente göç bağlamında sosyo-ekonomik ve demografik özellikleriyle birçok araştırmaya konu olmuştur. Fakat İstanbul yerleşik nüfusunun Türkiye’nin diğer şehirlerine kayıtlı olma yoğunluğu da önemlidir. Bu çalışmanın amacı 2012 ve 2017 yıllarındaki nüfus değişimini göz önünde bulundurarak İstanbul ilçelerinin ayrıntılı nüfus yoğunluğu ve büyüme analizini yapmak, ilgili faktörleri değerlendirmek, hemşehri ağlarını okumak adına yerleşik nüfus kütük bilgileri bakımından inceleyerek elde edilen örüntüler doğrultusunda ilçe tipolojileri oluşturmaktır. Çalışmanın birinci bölümünde ilgili beş yıllık nüfus değişimlerine göre İstanbul ilçe nüfusları analiz edilmiştir. Ardından her bir ilçe için nüfusa kayıtlı olunan kente göre nüfus büyüme hızlarına bakılarak ilçelerin ağırlıklı olarak barındırdığı hemşehri ağları belirlenmiştir. İkinci bölümde ise ilçeler nüfus değişim özelliklerine göre belirli kategorilere ayrılmış ve bu kategoriler doğrultusunda ilçe tipolojileri oluşturulmuştur..ABSTRACT IN ENGLISHA District Level Analysis of Istanbul’s Population Change (2012-2017)Istanbul having the largest population of Turkey with its 39 districts is the most internal-migrant-receiving city in Turkey. Particularly in the context of rural-to-urban migration, Istanbul has been became a subject of various researches with its socio-economic and demographic features. However, the density of Istanbul’s settled population who registered other cities of Turkey is important. The main aim of this study is to analyse population growth of all districts considering the population change between 2012 and 2017, to evaluate the related factors and to develop a district typology by using the data of settled population according to their family registration in the name of reading the current countryman networks. In the first section of the study, district populations of Istanbul are examined regarding the related five-year change. Afterwards, most repeated countryman networks of all Istanbul’s districts are specified regarding the population growth rate of the registered cities. In the latter section of the study, districts were divided into categories regarding the specific population change features which help to create district typology.
