SummaryThe cold promoted shortening of the thrombotest-times occuring in the plasmas of the majority of women on oral contraception or in the last trimester of pregnancy when incubated overnight at 0°–4° was investigated. The short thrombotest-times were caused by activation of factor VII in a time consuming reaction. Activation was also revealed in the intrinsic coagulation system, but the changes in the activities of coagulation factors other than factor VII were small.Comparison was made between clot promoting effects of cooling and contact, and it was concluded that while contact apparently exerted its main effect in the intrinsic system, cooling predominately activated the extrinsic plasma coagulation system. The cold promoted activation of factor VII seemed to be brought about by an activator.

A congenital Antithrombin III (AT III) deficiency affecting 7 members of 3 families is reported. The first throrabo-embolic accidents were observed between the age of 22 and 35 : they were spontaneous or occured after delivery or oral contraception. in one patient, a deep vein thrombosis was observed during heparin treatment. in 2 cases, recurrent pulmonary embolic episodes required vena cava ligation. No thromboembolic accident was observed during oral anticoagulation.AT III was measured by an amidolytic method and by the Mancini method on plasma and serum ; the antithrombin activity was determined on serum by the von Kaulla method. in 7 patients, a decreased AT III was found by all the methods performed. The AT III level was around 50 % in patients treated or not by oral anticoagulants One patient was studied during heparin treatment and then under oral anticoagulants : AT III levels were lower under heparin.

What makes adults have unprotected casual sex under the influence of alcohol? In 1995 afield qualitative study on alcohol and sexuality was undertaken among 33 guests to three clubs designed to attract people from different social layers in Oslo. Men were reluctant to use condoms because of reduced pleasure and sensation. Females’ problems dealt with social stigmatization and with what was sought in the sexual encounter. Condoms were not likely to be used if the woman used oral contraception. The informants trusted the partner would tell of diseases. Trusting was connected to the partner's social status. In love contexts, the symbolic value of sex without condoms may be greater than for sex with condoms. In non-love contexts, condom use was connected to acting responsibly. The informants tended to blame the alcohol for not using condoms. However, rather than failing to use condoms, people more likely never intended to use them.
