Arrival timing diagnostics performed at a soft X-ray free-electron laser (FEL) beamline of SACLA are described. Intense soft X-ray FEL pulses with one-dimensional focusing efficiently induce transient changes of optical reflectivity on the surface of GaAs. The arrival timing between soft X-ray FEL and optical laser pulses was successfully measured as a spatial position of the reflectivity change. The temporal resolution evaluated from the imaging system reaches ∼10 fs. This method requires only a small portion of the incident pulse energy, which enables the simultaneous operation of the arrival timing diagnostics and experiments by introducing a wavefront-splitting scheme.

Emission of energetic ions from solid targets irradiated by intense ultrashort laser pulses is studied in the framework of a one-dimensional self-consistent hydrodynamical model. The computed ion spectra reproduce well the basic parameters of published experimental results. Optimum conditions are found for the generation of MeV ions by picosecond laser pulses.

AbstractA one-dimensional (1D) numerical model for studying enhanced terahertz (THz) radiation generation by mixing of ordinary and extraordinary modes of two-color laser pulses propagating in magnetized plasma has been presented. The direction of the static external magnetic field is such that one of the two laser pulses propagates in the extraordinary mode, while the other pulse propagates in the ordinary mode, through homogeneous plasma. A transverse electromagnetic wave with frequency in the THz range is generated due to the presence of the external magnetic field. It is observed that larger amplitude THz radiation can be generated by mixing of the ordinary and extraordinary modes of the two-color laser pulses as compared with the single laser pulse propagating in the extraordinary mode. Further, 2D simulations using the XOOPIC code show that the fields obtained via simulation study are compatible with those obtained from the numerical model.

A new silver(I) nitrate complex of 2-(2-aminoethyl)pyridine (aepy), [Ag2(μ-NO3)2(μ-aepy)2]n, has been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray diffractometry. Two silver(I) ions are doubly bridged by two bidentate aepy ligands forming dimeric building block [Ag2(μ-aepy)2] units with a Ag···Ag distance of 3.0587(17)Å . These dimeric units are further doubly bridged by two nitrato ligands into a one-dimensional polymeric chain. The nitrato ligand exhibits an uncommon bidentate bridging mode of Ag-ONO-Ag. The title complex features a hydrogen bonded two-dimensional supramolecular framework formed via N-H···O hydrogen bonds, involving the uncoordinated O atom of the nitrate ligand and amine hydrogen atoms of aepy. The thermal stability of the title complex was investigated using thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis.
