Characterization of ultra-intense laser in radiation damping regime using ponderomotive scattering

We present a novel approach to analyzing phase-space distributions of electrons ponderomotively scattered off an ultra-intense laser pulse and comment on implications for thus conceivable in-situ laser-characterization schemes. To this end, we present fully relativistic test particle simulations of electrons scattered from an ultra-intense, counter-propagating laser pulse. The simulations unveil non-trivial scalings of the scattered electron distribution with the laser intensity, pulse duration, beam waist, and energy of the electron bunch. We quantify the found scalings by means of an analytical expression for the scattering angle of an electron bunch ponderomotively scattered from a counter-propagating, ultra-intense laser pulse, also accounting for radiation reaction (RR) through the Landau-Lifshitz (LL) model. For various laser and bunch parameters, the derived formula is in excellent quantitative agreement with the simulations. We also demonstrate how in the radiation-dominated regime a simple re-scaling of our model's input parameter yields quantitative agreement with numerical simulations based on the LL model.

Vacuum laser acceleration of super-ponderomotive electrons using relativistic transparency injection

Intense lasers can accelerate electrons to very high energy over a short distance. Such compact accelerators have several potential applications including fast ignition, high energy physics, and radiography. Among the various schemes of laser-based electron acceleration, vacuum laser acceleration has the merits of super-high acceleration gradient and great simplicity. Yet its realization has been difficult because injecting free electrons into the fast-oscillating laser field is not trivial. Here we demonstrate free-electron injection and subsequent vacuum laser acceleration of electrons up to 20 MeV using the relativistic transparency effect. When a high-contrast intense laser drives a thin solid foil, electrons from the dense opaque plasma are first accelerated to near-light speed by the standing laser wave in front of the solid foil and subsequently injected into the transmitted laser field as the opaque plasma becomes relativistically transparent. It is possible to further optimize the electron injection/acceleration by manipulating the laser polarization, incident angle, and temporal pulse shaping. Our result also sheds light on the fundamental relativistic transparency process, crucial for producing secondary particle and light sources.

Investigation of the ejected mass during high-intensity laser solid interaction for improved plasma mirror generation

The interaction of very intense and ultrashort laser pulses with solid targets is a topic that has attracted a large amount of interest in science and applications. This interest is boosted by the large progress made in the development of high repetition rate, high-power laser systems. With the significant increase in average power, there is concern about how to deal with ablated debris that may lead to contamination and damage during interaction experiments with solid targets. This issue is also highly relevant in experiments that include plasma mirrors. These are often employed to increase the contrast ratio of the intense laser pulse to unwanted laser pre-pulses from the amplifier chain and/or the background of amplified spontaneous emission. For this reason, the present work investigates the mass ejected from the target into vacuum for different conditions, particularly those present when plasma mirrors are introduced. The total amount of ablated mass can be reduced by making use of a temporally controlled plasma expansion that enhances the plasma mirror reflectivity. In this way, high intensity laser interaction experiments can be carried out with efficient and clean plasma mirrors significantly reducing the degradation of the laser optics and plasma diagnostics placed near the interaction.

Post-solitons and electron vortices generated by femtosecond intense laser interacting with uniform near-critical-density plasmas

Generation of nonlinear structures, such as stimulated Raman side scattering waves, post-solitons and electron vortices, during ultra-short intense laser pulse transportation in near-critical-density (NCD) plasmas are studied by using multi-dimensional particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations. In two-dimensional geometries, both P- and S- polarized laser pulses are used to drive these nonlinear structures and to check the polarization effects on them. In the S-polarized case, the scattered waves can be captured by surrounding plasmas leading to the generation of post-solitons, while the main pulse excites convective electric currents leading to the formation of electron vortices through Kelvin-Helmholtz instability (KHI). In the P-polarized case, the scattered waves dissipate their energy by heating surrounding plasmas. Electron vortices are excited due to the hosing instability of the drive laser. These polarization dependent physical processes are reproduced in two different planes perpendicular to the laser propagation direction in three-dimensional simulation with linearly polarized laser driver. The current work provides inspiration for future experiments of laser-NCD plasma interactions.

Generation of dense and well-collimated positron beam via ultra-intense laser colliding with a flying plasma layer

With the forthcoming 10-100PW laser facilities, laser-driven electron-positron-pair production has gained particular interest. Here a scheme to enhance the generation of dense electron-positron-pairs is proposed and numerically demonstrated, employing double laser pulses at the intensity level of 10^23 W cm^(-2). The first laser accelerates a thin foil to a relativistic speed via the radiation-pressure-acceleration mechanism and a counter-propagating laser irradiates this flying plasma layer. The simulation results indicate that a high-yield and well-collimated positron beam (~5.5×10^10 positrons/pulse, 8.8nC/pulse) is generated with a large peak density(1.1×10^21 cm^(-3) ) by using tens-of-PW laser pulses.
