A Multi-Method Approach for Near Real Time Conflict and Crisis Early Warning

Purpose The dynamic yet volatile nature of tourism and travel industry in a competitive environment calls for enhanced marketing intelligence and analytics, especially for those entities with limited marketing budgets. The past decade has witnessed an increased use of user-generated content (UGC) analysis as a marketing tool to make better informed decisions. Likewise, textual data analysis of UGC has gained much attention among tourism and hospitality scholars. Nonetheless, most of the scholarly works have focused on the singular application of an existing method or technique rather than using a multi-method approach. The purpose of this study is to propose a novel Web analytics methodology to examine online reviews posted by tourists in real time and assist decision-makers tasked with marketing strategy and intelligence. Design/methodology/approach For illustration, the case of tourism campaign in India was undertaken. A total of 305,298 reviews were collected, and after filtering, 276,154 reviews were qualified for analysis using a string of models. Descriptive charts, sentiment analysis, clustering, topic modeling and machine learning algorithms for real-time classification were applied. Findings Using big data from TripAdvisor, a total of 145 tourist destinations were clustered based on tourists’ perceptions. Further exploration of each cluster through topic modeling was conducted, which revealed interesting insights into satisfiers and dissatisfiers of different clusters of destinations. The results supported the use of the proposed multi-method Web-analytics approach. Practical implications The proposed machine learning model demonstrated that it could provide real-time information on the sentiments in each incoming review about a destination. This information might be useful for taking timely action for improvisation or controlling a service situation. Originality/value In terms of Web-analytics and UGC, a comprehensive analytical model to perform an end-to-end understanding of tourist behavior patterns and offer the potential for real-time interpretation is rarely proposed. The current study not only proposes such a model but also offers empirical evidence for a successful application. It contributes to the literature by providing scholars interested in textual analytics a step-by-step guide to implement a multi-method approach.

Monitoring water levels of lakes, streams, rivers and other water basins is of essential importance and is a popular measurement for a number of different industries and organisations. Remote water level monitoring helps to provide an early warning feature by sending advance alerts when the water level is increased (reaches a certain threshold). The purpose of this report is to present an affordable solution for measuring water levels in water sources using IoT and LPWAN. The assembled system enables recording of water level fluctuations in real time and storing the collected data on a remote database through LoRaWAN for further processing and analysis.

Background: In recent years, sudden deaths of primary and secondary school students caused by sports activities have drawn great attention in education and medical circles. It is necessary for schools to monitor the physical condition of the students in order to reasonably set the duration of their physical activity. At present, the physical condition monitoring instruments used in various hospitals are expensive, bulky, and difficult to operate, and the detection process is complicated. Therefore, existing approaches cannot meet the needs of physical education teachers on campus for detecting the physical condition of students. Methods: This study designs a portable human-physiological-state monitoring and analysis system. Real-time communication between a wearable measurement device and a monitoring device can be ensured by real-time detection of the environment and power control of the transmitted signal. Results: From a theoretical point of view, the larger the number of segments M, the more significantly the reduction of false alarm probability. The simulation results also show this fact. Compared with the conventional early warning mechanism, the probability of a false alarm for the proposed system is lower, and the greater the number of segments, the faster its reaction speed. Conclusion: The portable monitoring system of student physical condition for use in physical education of primary and middle school students proposed in this paper ensures real-time monitoring of the members within the system in an open environment, and further proposes an early warning mechanism for combining multiple vital sign parameters. In addition, the proposed system functions faster; the average early warning time required is only one-quarter of that of the conventional system.

Objective: This study focused on the application of wearable technology in the safety monitoring and early warning for subway construction workers. Methods: With the help of real-time video surveillance and RFID positioning which was applied in the construction has realized the real-time monitoring and early warning of on-site construction to a certain extent, but there are still some problems. Real-time video surveillance technology relies on monitoring equipment, while the location of the equipment is fixed, so it is difficult to meet the full coverage of the construction site. However, wearable technologies can solve this problem, they have outstanding performance in collecting workers’ information, especially physiological state data and positioning data. Meanwhile, wearable technology has no impact on work and is not subject to the inference of dynamic environment. Results and conclusion: The first time the system applied to subway construction was a great success. During the construction of the station, the number of occurrences of safety warnings was 43 times, but the number of occurrences of safety accidents was 0, which showed that the safety monitoring and early warning system played a significant role and worked out perfectly.

AbstractDisasters can move quickly. Effective communication is a critical resource that can significantly enhance public safety. A mass notification system (MNS) uses text messaging to inform constituents of crisis, provide recommendations, connect to resources, and has the advantage of speed. Limited research has been conducted on the variables that influence the effectiveness, utilization, and perceptions of MNS. The extant study employs a multi-method approach to advance the scholarly knowledge on MNS. All emergency managers in a state were surveyed on issues of MNS enrollment, utilization, and brand. A subgroup of emergency managers were then interviewed to provide depth to the survey findings. Key findings indicate wide variability in MNS usage, little relationship between population size and enrollment, and a high perceived importance of MNS as a communication modality. Policy implications and recommendations are offered.

The social sciences in Latin America have always had a special connection with the study and analysis of the place of emotions in the social structuration processes. The aim of this article is to offer a synthetic exposition of some inquiries about emotions and the politics of sensibilities in Latin America, emphasizing those that are being felt in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. To achieve this objective, first we offer a synthesis of the theoretical and methodological points that will guide the interpretation; then we draw on pre-existing inquiries and surveys which allow us to capture the state of sensibilities before and during the pandemic in the region; and finally some conclusions are presented. The work is based on a multi-method approach, where qualitative and quantitative secondary and primary data are articulated in tandem.

This article argues that work on geographies of Blackness and Black Geographies emphasizes different aspects of Black experiences and relies on different methodologies in making these emphases. I focus on the work of six prominent geographers who engage with questions of Blackness and examine the different data sources they draw on. I show that they all employ a multi-method, interdisciplinary approach in their scholarship and that all of them, regardless of emphasis or method, foreground the experiences of black populations. I argue that this collective multi-method approach pushes the conceptual boundaries of the wider discipline of Geography.
