Abstract In this paper, we study the energy absorption of metamaterials composed of unit cells whose special geometry makes the cross-sectional area and the volume of the bodies generated from them constant (for the same enclosing box dimensions). After a parametric description of such special geometries, we analyzed by finite element analysis the deformation of the metamaterials we have designed during compression. We 3D printed the designed metamaterials from plastic to subject them to real compression. The results of the finite element analysis were compared with the real compaction results. Then, for each test specimen, we plotted its compaction curve. By fitting a polynomial to the compaction curves and integrating it (area under the curve), the energy absorption of the samples can be obtained. As a result of these investigations, we drew a conclusion about the relationship between energy absorption and cell number.

Using the mechanical design of the software Solid works to established the 280 t LF the ladle furnace transportation car frame three dimensional model, and by using the finite element analysis of software Cosmos/works to static analysis for the frames, revealing that the frame of structure stress and strain distribution map of the frame, and also reveals that dangerous points and dangerous sections. Using resistance strain gauge to measure 280 t ladle transportation car frame, it is concluded that the frame of stress and strain distributions. Through the electrical measurement test the results were compared with finite element analysis results, further proof that the finite element analysis of the accuracy of the results provides theory basis for the optimization design of the frames.

Aero Gas Turbine engines power aircrafts for civil transport application as well as for military fighter jets. Jet pipe casing assembly is one of the critical components of such an Aero Gas Turbine engine. The objective of the casing is to carry out the required aerodynamic performance with a simultaneous structural performance. The Jet pipe casing assembly located in the rear end of the engine would, in case of fighter jet, consist of an After Burner also called as reheater which is used for thrust augmentation to meet the critical additional thrust requirement as demanded by the combat environment in the war field. The combustion volume for the After burner operation together with the aerodynamic conditions in terms of pressure, temperature and optimum air velocity is provided by the Jet pipe casing. While meeting the aerodynamic requirements, the casing is also expected to meet the structural requirements. The casing carries a Convergent-Divergent Nozzle in the downstream side (at the rear end) and in the upstream side the casing is attached with a rear mount ring which is an interface between engine and the airframe. The mechanical design parameters involving Strength reserve factors, Fatigue Life, Natural Frequencies along with buckling strength margins are assessed while the Jet pipe casing delivers the aerodynamic outputs during the engine operation. A three dimensional non linear Finite Element analysis of the Jet pipe casing assembly is carried out, considering the up & down stream aerodynamics together with the mechanical boundary conditions in order to assess the Mechanical design parameters.

A finite-element analysis of possible silicon carbide (SiC), folded-beam, lateral-resonating accelerometers is presented. Results include stiffness coefficients, acceleration sensitivities, resonant frequency versus temperature, and proof-mass displacements due to centripetal acceleration of a blade-mounted sensor. The surface micromachined devices, which are similar to the Analog Devices® Inc., (Norwood, MA) air-bag crash detector, are etched from 2-μm thick, 3C-SiC films grown at 1600 K using atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition (APCVD). The substrate is a 500 μm-thick, (100) silicon wafer. Polysilicon or silicon dioxide is used as a sacrificial layer. The finite-element analysis includes temperature-dependent properties, shape change due to volume expansion, and thermal stress caused by differential thermal expansion of the materials. The finite-element results are compared to experimental results for a SiC device of similar, but not identical, geometry. Along with changes in mechanical design, blade-mounted sensors would require on-chip circuitry to cancel displacements due to centripetal acceleration and improve sensitivity and bandwidth. These findings may result in better accelerometer designs for this application.

Abstract This paper presents the mechanical design and prototyping of a reconfigurable universal joint. An electronically actuated mechanical switch allows to change joint’s configuration so that two different universal pairs can be obtained. One of the two revolute axes rotates freely whereas the other is driven by a servomotor: its direction can be chosen by the user, providing two different mechanical arrangements. It can be demonstrated that the use of this reconfigurable joint in a specific parallel kinematic manipulator equipped with three identical legs allows to change the mobility of its moving platform. The design proposed in the current work has been driven by analytical analyses and multibody simulations. A finite element analysis demonstrates the effectiveness of the mechanical design.
