A possibility to increase both stiffness and strength of aluminium-based structures for the application in lightweight profiles for vehicle space frames is the use of composite extrusions in which high-strength metallic reinforcements are incorporated. Within the scope of the present investigations, composite-extruded profiles with wire-reinforcements made of austenitic spring steel 1.4310 (X10CrNi18-8), in an aluminium matrix AA6060 (AlMgSi0.5), which were exposed to different corrosive media for different times, were characterised in terms of the debonding shear strength using the push-out-technique. The formation of a galvanic couple could be conceived mathematically in regard of terms describing the formation of a shear-impeding layer and the corrosive attack. Thereby the parameters for the different media could be determined.

In the south-west German village of Hayingen, the playwright-director Martin Schleker presents large open-air productions of politically sensitive yet entertaining plays to mass audiences on an annual basis. This article explores the element of risk in Schleker's work: his use of purely amateur performers; his job-creation schemes for young people; and his left-wing and often anti-Catholic stance on issues such as racism and nuclear arms before often deeply conservative, culturally Catholic audiences. Schleker's work is situated in the wider context of the state-funded, civic theatres in Germany, and of the tradition of open-air ‘Naturtheater’ which is particularly strong in the Swabian region. Some assumptions surrounding such binary divides as amateur-professional and high art-entertainment are also explored. Data for this article was collected in the Hayingen ‘Naturtheater’ during a period of ethnographic research supported by the Leverhulme Trust. Having completed her doctorate at Sheffield University, Alison Phipps has been working as a lecturer in the Department of German – and in particular in the Centre for Intercultural Germanistics – at Glasgow University since October 1995. She has published in the areas of her research interests, which include contemporary German theatre and performance research, Ethnographic approaches to language education, and popular German culture and intercultural studies.

Timber poles are not often used for structural purposes in building, although they are a cheap material with good mechanical qualities. This is due to the fact that the poles often suffer from shrinkage cracks, which makes it difficult to transfer the load from one element to another in a way that is structurally sound. To overcome this particular problem, in the Civil Engineering Department of the Delft University of Technology a manually operated tool has been developed with which strong and tight lacings of galvanized steel wire can be strung around the poles in order to keep them together. This principle has been applied in spatial-type structures, where larger numbers of identical, relatively thin, poles of 10 cm diameter are interconnected to form double-layer grids. According to this principle a few prototype structures have been built and test-loaded, including the load-bearing frames of two agricultural buildings, one at Lelystad in The Netherlands and one at Winchester in England. A few others are under construction. The tool was originally designed for use in developing countries. For other countries a more industrialized way of producing the laced connections is considered.
