This paper presents the results of an exploratory study into the phenomenon of intellectual entrepreneurship and the patterns of its emergence as understood through the experience of individuals. The research is of qualitative nature, and the results are based on secondary research and interviews of 16 intellectual entrepreneurs of Latvia. It provides a model of intellectual entrepreneurship, which is defined as capitalization of knowledge in an innovative environment. It also presents four patterns of emergence of intellectual entrepreneurship in Latvia; these include patterns characteristic of a transition period from command to a free market economy and that occurring during times of crises, and ones relevant to a stable economic environment. The paper contributes to the modern theory of entrepreneurship where the concept of intellectual entrepreneurship is used, but with different interpretations, and until recently had not been systematically studied.

Given the increasingly demanding labor market, today’s professional should act according to certain generic competencies, which allows him to perform as required by the contemporary world. In parallel, human resource management (HRM) current trends, highlight the importance that managing by competencies has in the organizational context, in the sense that it impels a more strategic and integrated HRM. The evidence of the theoretical and practical pertinence of this theme resulted in an exploratory study of a qualitative nature, which findings lead us to conclude that the most valued generic competencies by firms are flexibility, interpersonal relationship, adjustment to change and teamwork. Another finding is that HRM managing by competencies practices is characterized by informality. Managing by competencies is more frequent presence in processes as: recruitment, retention and in the employees’ development plans.

Abstract Objective: To understand the feelings and difficulties experienced by cancer patients in relation to the diagnostic and therapeutic itineraries. Methods: An exploratory study of a qualitative nature, developed with 13 people with cancer, through an interview. In the period from June to September of 2017 data were collected and later submitted to content analysis. Results: The results included the unpleasant feelings that patients with cancer experience, and the recognition of factors that influence the re-signification of this phase. In addition, we observed the difficulties that perpass the routine of treatment and that compromise the basic needs of these individuals. Final considerations: It was understood that during the experience of the diagnostic and therapeutic itinerary, people with cancer experience negative feelings and many difficulties. However, some factors make possible the resignification of the disease and need to be considered by health professionals and managers to minimize the impact of the disease during this journey.

Purpose This exploratory study examined the language skills and the type and frequency of disfluencies in the spoken narrative production of Spanish–English bilingual children who do not stutter. Method A cross-sectional sample of 29 bilingual students (16 boys and 13 girls) enrolled in grades prekindergarten through Grade 4 produced a total of 58 narrative retell language samples in English and Spanish. Key outcome measures in each language included the percentage of normal (%ND) and stuttering-like (%SLD) disfluencies, percentage of words in mazes (%MzWds), number of total words, number of different words, and mean length of utterance in words. Results Cross-linguistic, pairwise comparisons revealed significant differences with medium effect sizes for %ND and %MzWds (both lower for English) as well as for number of different words (lower for Spanish). On average, the total percentage of mazed words was higher than 10% in both languages, a pattern driven primarily by %ND; %SLDs were below 1% in both languages. Multiple linear regression models for %ND and %SLD in each language indicated that %MzWds was the primary predictor across languages beyond other language measures and demographic variables. Conclusions The findings extend the evidence base with regard to the frequency and type of disfluencies that can be expected in bilingual children who do not stutter in grades prekindergarten to Grade 4. The data indicate that %MzWds and %ND can similarly index the normal disfluencies of bilingual children during narrative production. The potential clinical implications of the findings from this study are discussed.
