In next-generation computing, the role of cloud, internet and smart devices will be capacious. Nowadays we all are familiar with the word smart. This word is used a number of times in our daily life. The Internet of Things (IoT) will produce remarkable different kinds of information from different resources. It can store big data in the cloud. The fog computing acts as an interface between cloud and IoT. The extension of fog in this framework works on physical things under IoT. The IoT devices are called fog nodes, they can have accessed anywhere within the range of the network. The blockchain is a novel approach to record the transactions in a sequence securely. Developing a new blockchains based middleware framework in the architecture of the Internet of Things is one of the critical issues of wireless networking where resolving such an issue would result in constant growth in the use and popularity of IoT. The proposed research creates a framework for providing the middleware framework in the internet of smart devices network for the internet of things using blockchains technology. Our main contribution links a new study that integrates blockchains to the Internet of things and provides communication security to the internet of smart devices.

This editorial introduces the special issue, entitled “Applications of Internet of Things”, of Symmetry. The topics covered in this issue fall under four main parts: (I) communication techniques and applications, (II) data science techniques and applications, (III) smart transportation, and (IV) smart homes. Four papers on sensing techniques and applications are included as follows: (1) “Reliability of improved cooperative communication over wireless sensor networks”, by Chen et al.; (2) “User classification in crowdsourcing-based cooperative spectrum sensing”, by Zhai and Wang; (3) “IoT’s tiny steps towards 5G: Telco’s perspective”, by Cero et al.; and (4) “An Internet of things area coverage analyzer (ITHACA) for complex topographical scenarios”, by Parada et al. One paper on data science techniques and applications is as follows: “Internet of things: a scientometric review”, by Ruiz-Rosero et al. Two papers on smart transportation are as follows: (1) “An Internet of things approach for extracting featured data using an AIS database: an application based on the viewpoint of connected ships”, by He et al.; and (2) “The development of key technologies in applications of vessels connected to the Internet”, by Tian et al. Two papers on smart home are as follows: (1) “A novel approach based on time cluster for activity recognition of daily living in smart homes”, by Liu et al.; and (2) “IoT-based image recognition system for smart home-delivered meal services”, by Tseng et al.

Under uncertainty, understanding and controlling complex environments is only possible with an ability to use distributed computing by the way of information exchange between devices to be able to understand the response of the system to a particular problem. From transformation of raw data in a huge distribution of network into the meaningful information, to use the understood knowledge to make rapid decisions needs to have a network composed of smart devices. Internet of things (IoT) is a novel approach, where these smart devices can communicate with each other by using key technologies of artificial intelligence (AI) in order to make timely autonomous decisions. This emerging technical advancement and realization of horizontal and vertical integration caused the fourth stage of industrialization (Industry 4.0). The objective of this chapter is to give detailed information on both IoT based on key AI technologies and Industry 4.0. It is expected to shed light on new work to be done by providing explanations about the new areas that will emerge with this new technology.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is expected to deliver a whole range of new services to all parts of our society, and improve the way we work and live. The challenges within the Internet of Things are often related to interoperability, device resource constraints, a device to device connection and security. One of the essential elements of identification for each Internet of Things devices is the naming system and addresses. With this naming system, Internet of Things devices can be able to be discoverable by users. In this paper, we propose the IoT resource auto-registration and accessing indoor services based on Domain Name System (DNS) in the Open Connectivity Foundation (OCF) environment. We have used the Internet of Things Platform and DNS server for IoT Resource auto-registration and discovery in the Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4). An existing system called Domain Name Auto-Registration in Internet Protocol version 6 can be used for Internet of Things devices for auto-registration and resource discovery. However, this system is not acceptable in the existing internet networks, because the highest percentage of the networks on the Internet are configured in Internet Protocol version 4. Through the proposed auto-registration system, clients can be able to discover the resources and access the services in the OCF network. Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP) is utilized for the IoT device auto-registration and accessing the services in the OCF network.

Recently, the scientific community has demonstrated a special interest in the process related to the integration of the agent-oriented technology with Internet of Things (IoT) platforms. Then, it arises a novel approach named Internet of Agents (IoA) as an alternative to add an intelligence and autonomy component for IoT devices and networks. This paper presents an analysis of the main benefits derived from the use of the IoA approach, based on a practical point of view regarding the necessities that humans demand in their daily life and work, which can be solved by IoT networks modeled as IoA infrastructures. It has been presented 24 study cases of the IoA approach at different domains ––smart industry, smart city and smart health wellbeing–– in order to define the scope of these proposals in terms of intelligence and autonomy in contrast to their corresponding generic IoT applications.

Internet of Things (IoT) is the advanced technology, were the constrained nodes/things (all the objects around us such as chair, home, car, keys, etc.) will be connected to the internet to form a network, for sharing and monitoring the data, remotely. RPL (IPv6 Routing Protocol for Low Power and Lossy networks) is a routing protocol particularly designed for the constrained (low powered, low computation, less size, etc.) networks with the protocol 6LoWPAN (IPv6 Low Powered wireless Personal Area Networks). Due to the constrained behaviour of the RPL protocol, it will leads to many RPL routing attacks such as Sinkhole, Black hole, Wormhole, Selective forwarding, rank attacks, etc. This paper was focused on the Wormhole attack. The Wormhole attack will select the packets from one location and drops those packets in some other location (malicious) by forming the Tunnelling. To detect this attack here proposed and implemented a novel approach called (ADWA). Acknowledgement based technique for detection of the wormhole attack in RPL based Internet of Things networks. This approach was shown efficient results with the Telosb sky emulator nodes in the Contiki Cooja simulator, in terms of the Packet delivery ratio, delay and detection of wormhole attack.

Agriculture is the main source that meets the food demand of living beings. The growth of a nation is predicted from the outcome of its Agricultural contribution. Population explosion, Climate change and poor environmental factors decreases the agriculture yield gradually. Smart Agriculture is the only solution to these challenges as it is focused on the modernization of existing agricultural methods. This can be implemented by adopting Internet of Things (IoT) in agriculture. Smart Agriculture focuses on data collection from various sensors such as Temperature, Humidity, Soil Moisture, Soil pH, and Soil Nitrogen. The main objective of this paper is to monitor the aforementioned factors that directly influence the growth of crops. The collected data from the farm lands are stored in a cloud database for analytics and predictive actions. Smart Agriculture provides a mechanism for efficient observation, measurement and response to changes in environment. It provides better water irrigation, appropriate fertilizers management and efficient soil nutrition and directly influence the productivity. It is also used to enhance quality and profitability in agriculture by using minimum resources with less environment pollution.
