Roadway support in swelling soft rocks in coal mines has become a critical challenge in recent years. For deformation control in swelling soft rocks, high strength sets are preferred in sites. But high strength always means high costs. Therefore, higher strength sets with not too much cost will be more welcomed in situ. Based on this, three new sets, including a floor beam set, a roof + floor beams set, and a roof + floor beams + braces set, have been developed in the present research. Strength comparisons and costs comparisons have been conducted in this research. Results illustrate that compared with the original set, in the floor beam set, the relative strength of bottom corners reaches 2.964, while the relative cost reaches 1.294; compared with the original set, in the roof + floor beams set, the relative strength of the top arch reaches 2.345, while the relative strength of bottom corners reaches 2.964, and the relative cost reaches 1.568; and compared with the original set, in the roof + floor beams + braces set, the relative strength of the top arch reaches 2.635, and the relative strength of bottom corners reaches 5.905, but the relative cost reaches 1.930. Floor beam set and roof + floor beams set illustrate higher strength and not too higher costs than the original set. Although the roof + floor beams + braces set exhibit much higher strength, they also demonstrate much higher costs than the original set. These new sets can be chosen according to different geological conditions in situ.

The conditions of coal seam mining in the mines of Ukraine have been considered. The problem of conducting coal mining by longwalls in the conditions of soft adjoining rocks, which concerns the protection of mine roadways located near the face, has been revealed. In such conditions, the existing protective constructions are ineffective due to the fact that they yield and get pressed into the soft rocks of the footwall. This indicated the need for research into the geomechanical state of soft rocks of the footwall. According to the results of known studies on the mechanism of rock mass failure around roadways and the data of physical and mechanical properties of the coal mass, which is represented by soft rocks, the correlation dependence has been obtained, the use of which allowed for the determination of the parameters of the rock deformation diagram and the establishment of the stability criterion of footwall rocks under the protection means and stability conditions of the geotechnical system “protective construction – adjoining rocks.” They are the basis of a new approach to ensure the stability of the roadways, which are supported behind the faces, by controlling the stress state in the system “protective construction – adjoining rocks.” This may be the basis for the development of new methods of protecting roadways in conditions of soft adjoining rocks.

The relevant issues of ensuring trouble-free mining operations on the underlying horizons, which are partially or fully overworked are studied in this paper. The problem has been solved using the example of a laminal massif of the Western Donbas soft rocks; complicating factors were taken into account: water-cut, fracturing, and the rheological properties manifestation. The model, proposed for calculation, has been substantiated in view of geomechanics, as well as the finite element method has been chosen to obtain the stress-strain state of the adjacent massif and support. At the first stage, mine observations of the state of mine working planned for overworking have been conducted and analysed. At the second stage, a computational experiment has been conducted in the most difficult areas. The stresses fields have been analysed according to vertical, horizontal and stresses intensity components of the soft rocks laminal massif, as well as their distribution curves for the recommended and basic fastening options. It has been proved that the recommended parameters of the fastening structure provide repair-free mine working maintenance for the entire exploitation period with account of overworking. Recommendations have been developed for mining the seam C6 in M.I. Stashkova Mine, DTEK Pavlohradvuhillia PJSC.
