Desa Grinting, Kecamatan Tulangan, Kabupaten Sidoarjo is a rice farming area which in the harvest season is abundant and the rice straw is not used to generate added value economically. Farmers tend to be rice straw and often pollute the surrounding air. Cultivation of straw mushroom using straw as a growing medium is a viable option to overcome this problem. However, the people of Desa Grinting do not yet have sufficient knowledge and understanding to carry out a mushroom cultivation business. This training aims to increase the knowledge, understanding and interest of the people in Desa Grinting to carry out a straw mushroom cultivation business using rice straw as a growing medium. Training has been conducted using zoom and Whatapp applications for 2 months. The Youth Organization and GAPOKTAN members became target partners for this online training. During the training, the target partners were very active and enthusiastic about participating in the training, holding discussions and questions and answers. This courage training succeeded in increasing the knowledge, understanding and business interest of the target partners in cultivating edible mushrooms using straw as a growing medium. The real results in the form of behavior change were evident in the target partners and there were members who had done independent practice of making plant media using rice straw.

This research aims to elaborate characteristics of an organic fertilizer, named as “Organonitrofos”, produced from agricultural wastes supplemented with spent mushroom substrate (SMS) made from oil palm empty fruit bunch (EFB). The EFB was formerly used as straw mushroom medium.  Research was carried out in two stages of experiment. In the first experiment, The SMS was taken from an experiment of mushroom production, where effect of size reduction and composting duration of EFB on the mushroom production was investigated. The SMS was mixed with other materials (1:1), which is normally used as the raw materials of Organonitrofos, and was composted.  In the second experiment, the SMS was taken from other experiment of mushroom production where effect of inorganic and organic fertilizer supplements on the straw mushroom production was investigated.  The second experiment was carried out using the same procedure as in the first experiment. Physicochemical property of resulted Organonitrofos was evaluated and compared to other predecessors of Organonitrofos.  Results showed some noticeable changes of physicochemical properties.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to determine the proper bed design (BD) and burning of dry rice straw cover (BDRSC) to improve of rice straw mushroom (RSM) yield. A completely randomized block (CRB) experiment was carried out based on incubated rice straw bed under outdoor condition with 8 treatments and 5 replications, each replication as a row length of 1.5 m. The treatments included (1) Packing of rice straw (RS) - BDRSC, (2) Rolling of RS - BDRSC (3) Upward wood frame (UWF) containing RS - BDRSC, (4) Downward wood frame (DWF) containing RS- BDRSC, (5) Packing of RS– without BDRSC, (6) Rolling of RS - without BDRSC, (7) UWF - without BDRSC and (8) DWF - without BDRSC. The results showed that the temperature of bed met the demand of the growth and development of RSM. The length and width of the first 30 mushroom fruiting bodies (MFB) and mean weight per a MFB have not affected by bed types either BDRSC or without BDRSC. The BD as rolling of RS and UWF with BDRSC early produced MFB as compared to each corresponding treatment while BD with BDRSC expanded the harvest period, the exception for BD with UWF in combination with BDRSC. Total number of MFB and mean weight per 1.5 meter of rolling of RS incorporation of BDRSC (2.82 kg and 339.8 MFB) were higher than only rolling of RS (2.50 kg and 307.0 MFB), respectively.

A field experiment was conducted in the farmers’ field in Ratanpur, Marshaghai block of Kendrapara district in Odisha, an adopted village of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Kendrapara under the National Innovations in Climate-Resilient Agriculture (NICRA) project with the objective of determining the productivity of rice straw mushroom in off-season (Month of November) under different cultivation systems. Keeping in view the need to develop more resilient technology for farmers to combat the current scenario of changing climate and market demands along with generation of additional income, the possibility of growing this tropical mushroom during winter month was tested. The experiment was laid out in a randomized block design with 4 number of treatments and 6 replications with ten beds (blocks) taken in each replication. The treatments undertaken were as follows, T1- Rice straw mushroom cultivation in shade net, T2- Rice straw mushroom cultivation in poly house, T3- Rice straw mushroom cultivation in thatched roof and T4- Outdoor Rice straw mushroom cultivation. It was concluded from the findings that poly house system outperformed the other three cultivation systems i.e. shade net, thatched house and open situations in terms of yield maximization, gross and net return during the off-season (November). The poly house system produced 10.8 - 76.4% higher yield in comparison to other three systems with increased net returns and B:C ratio of 1.78 suggesting it to be the best cultivation system for off-season production of rice straw mushroom.

Rice straw produced from field is utilized for multiple purposes viz., incorporation in field itself, feeding paddy straw to the animals, burning in the field and thatching the farm houses. The above methods are uneconomical for the farmers and unhealthy for the animals. The new methods viz., composting, mushroom production and new animal feeding is identified as efficient methods for farmers in Cauvery delta zone. Cauvery delta zone includes the entire revenue taluks of Thanjavur, Thriuvarur, Nagappatinam districts numbering 20, five revenue taluks of Trichy districts, two of Cuddalore and one taluk of Puddukkottai districts thus the zone comprises of 28 revenue taluks of the eastern belt of state. All these taluks are benefited by the river Cauvery.
