Nowadays, an awareness of health benefits of omega-3 has been found. Polyunsaturated fatty acids, especially DHA, are more attention due to their role in human health. Hence, this study investigated the potential of by-products as freshwater fish source of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (omega-3 PUFAs). The by-products of processing accounted for approximately 55% of the catfish industry. Supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) of the by-products at 35 MPa, 40 ◦C, ethanol (95%, v/v) as the co-solvent, and the mass ratio of by-products to co-solvent as 1:1 generated a lipid yield at 30.9% and 21.5 % docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Additionally, urea complexation was an effective tool to enrich and purify DHA from lipids. DHA purity increased from 21.5% to 38.4% under the optimum complexation condition.

Janari lasterraren eta industrialki prozesatutako janariaren aroan bizi gara. Era berean, jaki hauek ekarri duten galera nutrizionala konpentsatzeko gehigarrien beharra geroz eta handiagoa da. Gehigarri horien artean hauexek ditugu: omega 3 gisako gantz azido asegabeak eta eragin antioxidatzailea duten polifenolak. Ildo honetatik, ardo hondakinak konposatu bioaktibo askoren iturri garrantzitsuak izan daitezke, sortzen den hondakin kopurua oso handia izateaz gain, bertan aurki daiteken gantz azido asegabeen eta polifenolen kontzentrazioa oso altua baita. Lan honetan ardo hondakinen balioa handitu ahal izateko bi urrats garrantzitsu gauzatu dira: osagai bioaktiboen erauzketa, eta polifenolen kasuan erraz degradatu daitezkeenez haien kapsularatzea. Konposatu bioaktiboak erauzteko bi urratseko jariakin gainkritiko bidezko erauzketa (SFE Supercritical Fluid Extraction) optimizatu da,eta ondorioz, lehen urratsean gantz azidoak soilik eta bigarren urratsean polifenolak soilik erauztea lortu dira. Kapsularatzeari dagokionez, zurrusta-bibrazio bidezko mikrokapsularatzea (VNM Vibration Nozzle Microencapsulation) erabili da 150 eta 300 µm-ko zurrustekin kaltzio-alginatozko eta kaltzio-alginato-kitosanezko tamaina ezberdinetako mikrokapsulak eratzeko. Prozesu horretan eragina duten aldagaiak optimizatu, kapsulak sortu eta haien egonkortasuna aztertu da 6 hilabetetan zehar hainbat kontserbazio baldintzatan (4°C-tara ilunpean eta giro tenperaturan ilunpean eta argipean). Kapsulatutako polifenolen egonkortasuna baldintza guztietan kapsulatu gabeena baino askoz ere handiagoa dela ikusi da.

Given the health-beneficial properties of compounds from hop, there is still a growing trend towards developing successful extraction methods with the highest yield and also receiving the products with high added value. The aim of this study was to develop efficient extraction method for isolation of bioactive compounds from the Polish “Marynka” hop variety. The modified two-step supercritical fluid extraction allowed to obtain two hop samples, namely crude extract (E1), composed of α-acids, β-acids, and terpene derivatives, as well as pure xanthohumol with higher yield than that of other available methods. The post-extraction residues (R1) were re-extracted in order to obtain extract E2 enriched in xanthohumol. Then, both samples were subjected to investigation of their antibacterial (anti-acne, anti-caries), cytotoxic, and anti-proliferative activities in vitro. It was demonstrated that extract (E1) possessed more beneficial biological properties than xanthohumol. It exhibited not only better antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria strains (MIC, MBC) but also possessed a higher synergistic effect with commercial antibiotics when compared to xanthohumol. Moreover, cell culture experiments revealed that crude extract neither inhibited viability nor divisions of normal skin fibroblasts as strongly as xanthohumol. In turn, calculated selectivity indexes showed that the crude extract had from slightly to significantly better selective anti-proliferative activity towards cancer cells in comparison with xanthohumol.
