Systems and applications embedded with facial detection and recognition capabilities are founded on the notion that there are differences in face structures among individuals, and as such, we can perform face-matching using the facial symmetry. A widely used application of facial detection and recognition is in security. It is important that the images be processed correctly for computer-based facial recognition, hence, the usage of efficient, cost-effective algorithms and a robust database. This research work puts these measures into consideration and attempts to determine a cost-effective and reliable algorithm out of three algorithms examined. Signatures have been used as a means to authenticate documents for centuries. From the outset, the focus of forensic examinations was to both objectively and subjectively establish whether they were genuine (written by the specimen author) or simulated (written by an imposter/forger). With the emergence of new computing technologies, additional objective examination techniques designed to determine the authenticity of questioned signatures became available. Although the opinions of Forensic Handwriting Examiners (FHEs) remain the most popular method of signature authenticity determinations, computer based techniques are attracting increasing interest within the forensic community. The question here is; which is better: man or machine? To address this question we focus on empirically comparing the performance of the two, on the same or similar material. The novelty of this work is that we have applied various state-of-the-art signature verification systems to questioned signature problems which had already been worked by FHEs and then performed a comparative analysis of the two. It involves image pattern recognition based on certain empirical rules along with the analyst interpretation of organized convection.  The computer-based algorithm can minimize these subjective judgement discrepancies between different analysis centers estimating the same storm.  This modified version is called Advanced Objective Dvorak Technique (AODT) and which is applicable for well-developed tropical cyclones. In this paper the performance of the AODT is evaluated on three cases of the year 2004 tropical cyclones. Comparative analysis indicates the technique to be competitive with, the Dvorak-based intensity estimates produced operationally by satellite analysts from tropical analysis centers.
