Smart building monitoring demands a new software infrastructure that can elaborate building domain knowledge in order to provide advanced and intelligent functionalities. Conventional facility management (FM) software tools lack semantically rich components, and that limits the capability of supporting software for automatic information sharing, resource negotiation and to assist in timely decision making. Recent hardware innovation on compact ZigBee sensor devices, software developments on ontology and intelligent software agent paradigms provide a good opportunity to develop tools that can further improve current FM practices. This paper introduces an integrated framework which includes a ZigBee based sensor network and underlying multi-agent software (MAS) components. Several different types of sensors were integrated with the ZigBee host devices to produce compact multi-functional sensor units. The MAS framework incorporates the belief-desire-intention (BDI) abstraction with ontology support (provided via explicit knowledge bases). The different software agent types have been developed to work with sensor hardware to conduct resource negotiation, to optimize battery utilization, to monitor building space in a non-intrusive way and to reason about its usage through real time ontology model queries. The deployed sensor network shows promising intelligent characteristics, and it has been applied in several on-going research projects as an underlying decision making service. More applications and larger deployments have been planned for future work.

PurposeAn amalgamation of Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) and Analytical Network Process (ANP) has been performed to develop a decision-making framework for improving the overall performance of the microfinance institutions. A primary survey was conducted to collect real-time data from the heterogeneous stakeholders of microfinance institutions across India. The validation of the proposed framework is performed by comparing the results against the conventional method of Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP).Design/methodology/approachThis study identifies various dimensions and indicators for measuring the performance of Indian microfinance institutions. Additionally, the ranking and prioritisation of the performance dimensions and indicators is obtained by considering the mutual interrelation between them.FindingsThe study indicates that there exists a significant dyadic relationship between financial performance and social performance for improving the overall performance of the microfinance institutions. Governance is found to unidirectionally influence both financial and social performance. Among all the considered dimensions, financial performance of a microfinance institution is the most critical dimension for improving the overall performance. The top five performance indicators of the Indian microfinance institutions are funding source, borrowing and overhead cost, size of the firm, end-use of the money and depth of outreach.Research limitations/implicationsThe study was conducted in the context of Indian microfinance institutions; hence the scope of generalisation of the results is limited. This research considers both subjective and objective aspect of the performance dimensions and indicators from the perspective of multiple stakeholders (i.e. firm, society and regulator). The integrated framework is expected to aid in improving overall performance of microfinance institutions by focusing on the most critical (high prioritised) performance indicators.Originality/valueAn integrated DEMATEL-ANP framework is used in the domain of microfinance to assess the performance dimensions. This study is unique in terms of analysing performance of microfinance institutions from the perspective of heterogeneous stakeholders.

To better facilitate government management and planning based on public opinion, it is essential to propose a method for extracting public opinion perception features in consideration of an integrated framework, which aims at industry monitoring and decision-making. Based on fundamental characteristics of ordinary traffic incidents, this paper develops a perception features system of public opinion consisting of four modules, where the construction methods have been elaborated. First, mining thematic features is realized via the similarity calculation of text vector. Second, based on summarized Chinese expression patterns, time extraction rules, and a five-layer tree-like spatial feature thesaurus are established to extract spatiotemporal features. Third, the modeling of the emotional features is achieved by a dictionary-based analysis model. Fourth, the evolutional features are extracted by the Exponential Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroscedasticity (EGARCH). In view of the attributes of each module, an integrated framework is built to determine the collaboration relationship of feature indicators. Finally, a case study of Shenzhen public transport has been performed to illustrate the application of proposed methods. Results show that the strong odor in electric buses and a rumor that electric buses have great radiation are two main causes of the decrease in passenger satisfaction in the first quarter of 2017. In contrast, adding new bus lines, increasing service frequency, and guaranteeing the bus-lane right will improve passenger satisfaction, which is basically consistent with the official report. It should be noticed that the developed framework has been validated in the case study of passenger satisfaction analysis, while it can be extensively replicated in other fields. Furthermore, it is important for stakeholders to grasp the public perception of transportation services, in order to enhance public participation in transportation management and decision-making.
