Using the 133Xe-DSPECT technique, quantitative measurements of regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) were performed before and after provocation with acetazolamide (Diamox) i. v. in 32 patients without evidence of brain disease (normals). In 6 cases, additional studies were carried out to establish the time of maximal rCBF increase which was found to be approximately 15 min p. i. 1 g of Diamox increases the rCBF from 58 ±8 at rest to 73±5 ml/100 g/min. A Diamox dose of 2 g (9 cases) causes no further rCBF increase. After plotting the rCBF before provocation (rCBFR) and the Diamox-induced rCBF increase (reserve capacity, Δ rCBF) the regression line was Δ rCBF = −0,6 x rCBFR +50 (correlation coefficient: r = −0,77). In normals with relatively low rCBF values at rest, Diamox increases the reserve capacity much more than in normals with high rCBF values before provocation. It can be expected that this concept of measuring rCBF at rest and the reserve capacity will increase the sensitivity of distinguishing patients with reversible cerebrovascular disease (even bilateral) from normals.

Samples of skim milk and nonfat dry milk (NDM) made from it were collected, paired and tested for pyruvate concentration, [P], and Direct Microscopic count (DMC). The skim milk was tested for Standard Plate Count (SPC) and Psychrotrophic Plate Count (PPC). The geometric average DMC of skim milk was more than three times higher than that of the paired NDM samples. However, [P] of NDM was not significantly different from that of the skim milk. Although [P] of skim milk was poorly correlated with SPC and PPC, r = .31 and .26, respectively, it was relatively well correlated with DMC, r = .64. Data were widely dispersed around the regression line when [P] was ≤ 4.0 mg/L. However, [P] increased rapidly when DMCs were > 106/ml. A limit of 10 mg/L of [P] in NDM reconstituted 1:9 was chosen to represent the current U.S. Department of Agriculture Standard for DMC in NDM. This limit failed to classify about 10% of the samples correctly, assuming that each geometric mean DMC was correct. However, the probability that samples meeting the DMC standard would be rejected by the pyruvate test was quite low and the probability was moderate that samples which would be acceptable by the pyruvate test would be rejected by the DMC. For the latter, 28% of the samples having DMCs of ≥ 107/ml contained < 10 mg/L of pyruvate. No sample having ≥ 10 mg/L of pyruvate had a DMC of ≤ 107/ml. Pyruvate concentration in NDM did not change during storage at 5 or 32°C for 90 days.

The aim of this study was to compare the influence of constant or intermittent load on muscle activation and fatigue. The analysis and assessment of muscular activation and fatigue was based on surface EMG measurements from eight muscles (seven muscles of the right upper limb and trapezius muscle). Two EMG signal parameters were analyzed for each of the experimental conditions distinguished by the value of the external force and the character of the load – constant or intermittent. The amplitude related to its maximum (AMP) and the slope of the regression line between time and median frequency (SMF) were the EMG parameters that were analyzed. The results showed that constant load caused higher muscular fatigue than intermittent load despite the lower value of the external force and lower muscle activation. Results suggest that additional external force might influence muscle activation and fatigue more than upper limb posture. The results of the study support the thesis that all biomechanical factors which influence upper limb load and fatigue (upper limb posture, external force and time sequences) should be considered when work stands and work processes are designed. They also indicate that constant load should be especially avoided.

Twenty percent of global electricity supplied to the buildings is used for preventing air temperature increase; its consumption for this prevention will triple by 2050 up to China’s present needs. Heat removed from the thermal power plants may drive cold generation in the absorption devices where mass and heat transfer are two-phase phenomena; hence liquid film break-up into the rivulets is extensively investigated, which needs knowledge of the velocity profiles. Laminar flow in a pipe is used in the preliminary study, velocity profile of developed flow is used as a benchmark. The study account writes the applied apparatus with their calibration procedure, and the uncertainty estimation algorithm. The calibration regression line with the slope close to one and a high Pearson’s coefficient value is the final outcome. Therefore, the apparatus may be applied in the principal research.

It is important to develop a regional hydrogeological model to identify possible recharge and discharge areas for a sustainable use of a geothermal reservoir. The Los Humeros geothermal area is situated within five surficial watersheds and coveres an area of more than 15.000 km2. A total of 208 well and spring samples were collected between June 2017 and November 2018. The stable isotope data for this region define a regression line of δDH2O = 8.032·δ18O + 12 and indicate that groundwater is recharged by regional precipitation. At least 39 groundwater wells, with a maximum temperature of 35 °C, show temperatures above the reported mean average surface temperature of 15 °C. Characteristic elements for geothermal reservoir fluids (B, Li, As) are also present in these groundwaters, indicating a possible connection between the reservoir fluid and the local groundwater through local fracture systems. Concentration of B in these hot wells is between 150 and 35000 ppb.

An age-related change in potency of L-isoprenaline in the presence of ascorbic acid, desmethylimipramine, corticosterone, pargyline, and phentolamine was obtained in tracheal strips from guinea pigs of differing ages between 6 and 40 weeks. The potency in the strips from 100-week-old guinea pigs did not significantly differ from that in strips from 40-week-old animals. Single cells were prepared from the tracheal muscles of 6-, 10-, 40-, and 100-week-old guinea pigs. The specific binding of [3H]dihydroalprenolol to the single cells was saturable. The dissociation constants of [3H]dihydroalprenolol were in good agreement with those of the membrane fractions from the guinea-pig tracheal muscles, and did not change with age. An excellent relationship between the potency of L-isoprenaline and the maximum binding of [3H]dihydroalprenolol estimated in the preparations from 6- to 40-week-old guinea pigs was found, suggesting that the increase in the potency of L-isoprenaline is due to the increase in the maximum binding or receptor density. The value in the preparations from 100-week-old guinea pigs deviated significantly from the regression line. This suggests the possibility that the decrease in potency in the strips from 100-week-old animals is due to a change in post β-receptor processes in responsiveness.Key words: guinea-pig trachea, single cells, β-receptor density, ageing, dissociation constant.

Background Commonly used spasticity scales assess the resistance felt by the evaluator during passive stretching. These scales, however, have questionable validity and reliability. The tonic stretch reflex threshold (TSRT), or the angle at which motoneuronal recruitment begins in the resting state, is a promising alternative for spasticity measurement. Previous studies showed that spasticity and voluntary motor deficits after stroke may be characterized by a limitation in the ability of the central nervous system to regulate the range of the TSRT. Objective The study objective was to assess interevaluator reliability for TSRT plantar-flexor spasticity measurement. Design This was an interevaluator reliability study. Methods In 28 people after stroke, plantar-flexor spasticity was evaluated twice on the same day. Plantar-flexor muscles were stretched 20 times at different velocities assigned by a portable device. Plantar-flexor electromyographic signals and ankle angles were used to determine dynamic velocity-dependent thresholds. The TSRT was computed by extrapolating a regression line through dynamic velocity-dependent thresholds to the angular axis. Results Mean TSRTs in evaluations 1 and 2 were 66.0 degrees (SD=13.1°) and 65.8 degrees (SD=14.1°), respectively, with no significant difference between them. The intraclass correlation coefficient (2,1) was .851 (95% confidence interval=.703, .928). Limitations The notion of dynamic stretch reflex threshold does not exclude the possibility that spasticity is dependent on acceleration, as well as on velocity; future work will study both possibilities. Conclusions Tonic stretch reflex threshold interevaluator reliability for evaluating stroke-related plantar-flexor spasticity was very good. The TSRT is a reliable measure of spasticity. More information may be gained by combining the TSRT measurement with a measure of velocity-dependent resistance.
