This paper is a contribution to the discussion on the ethical and political limitations of institutionalised, dominant design practices and on the need to rethink the ways in which they operate. It points out that institutionalised design processes act as a dispositive of power that not only capture and colonise forms of life, but that also shape territories, bodies and languages through normative models that are exogenous to them. This discussion is crucial when thinking about the role that design has played in nurturing current crises. This paper is an inquiry into the possibility of design practice that is not institutionalised either by sovereign designing designers or by subordinated designed users, but that constitutes itself according to dynamics where design emerges as a common project-process of creative possibilities of being and becoming. Crucial aspects for a non-institutionalised design practice are identified through the analysis of a design experience with communities in Rio de Janeiro favelas. This paper shows how this design experience is based on a design approach that, through discursive structures, dynamically supports and is informed by dissent and consensus, and by the interplay between resistance and counter-resistance.

In this study, a unified optimal design approach is proposed for the design of skeletal dome structure (SDS). Thus, this study has three objectivities, i) presenting the emergence of proposed design integrity, ii) applying the proposed optimal design approach for the design optimization geometrically nonlinear SDS with both ellipse and sphere-shaped forms considering both the shape, size and topology-related design variables, iii) determining the dominant design criteria in the design of SDS. In this framework, the design of SDS is optimized thereby minimizing its entire weight and joint displacements and maximizing its member forces at the same time. The design constraints are borrowed from the provisions of American Petroleum Institute (API RP2A-LRFD) specification. A multi-objective optimization algorithm (MOA) named Pareto Archived Genetic Algorithm (PAGA), as an optimization tool is integrated by an automatic dome generating tool. Therefore, the novelty of this study comes from being the first attempt to obtain the optimal design in a way of integrating both member and joint-related design constraints by the geometrically nonlinear structural analysis. Consequently, it is displayed that that the proposed optimal design approach facilitates to determine an appropriate optimal design through a tradeoff analysis for designers depending on their preferences. The design concepts concerned with buckling, axial stress, combination of axial & bending, and yielding have the higher dominant effects in the optimal design of SDS. Furthermore, it is also demonstrated that the inclusion of diagonal members into the design of SDS provides a reduction in the violation of dominant design constraints.

The paper provides a critical analysis of the idea of technological unemployment. The overview of the existing literature on the employment effects of technological change shows that on the micro-level there exists strong and positive relationship between innovations and employment growth in firms; on the sectoral level this correlation becomes ambiguous; on the macro-level the impact of new technologies seems to be positive or neutral. This implies that fears of explosive growth of technological unemployment in the foreseeable future are exaggerated. Our analysis further suggests that new technologies affect mostly the structure of employment rather than its level. Additionally we argue that automation and digitalisation would change mostly task sets within particular occupations rather than distribution of workers by occupations.

The author compares several quantitative and qualitative approaches to forecasting to find appropriate methods to incorporate technological change in long-range forecasts of the world economy. A?number of long-run forecasts (with horizons over 10 years) for the world economy and national economies is reviewed to outline advantages and drawbacks for different ways to account for technological change. Various approaches based on their sensitivity to data quality and robustness to model misspecifications are compared and recommendations are offered on the choice of appropriate technique in long-run forecasts of the world economy in the presence of technological change.

The combined philosophy and design approach called Philosophy-through-Design (PtD) is proposed using an exemplary project about being-in-the-world in the digital age. PtD is a practical way to do philosophy through designing interventions, and involves various people in the exploration of philosophical concepts. It stems from the overlapping questions found in philosophy and design regarding human-technology interaction. By intertwining both, they benefit from describing, understanding and proposing human-technology interactions to unfold new questions and perspectives. In the exemplary project, being-in-the-world refers to a way of being that is embodied, active, open-ended and situational, based on the phenomenological and embodied theories of Tim Ingold. This concept questions what it means to be human in the digital age and how our lives with technology are built. The first results show the process of weaving together observation, creation and reflection, which presents Philosophy-through-Design as a promising method for designers to practice a tangible philosophy.
