In this study, a unified optimal design approach is proposed for the design of skeletal dome structure (SDS). Thus, this study has three objectivities, i) presenting the emergence of proposed design integrity, ii) applying the proposed optimal design approach for the design optimization geometrically nonlinear SDS with both ellipse and sphere-shaped forms considering both the shape, size and topology-related design variables, iii) determining the dominant design criteria in the design of SDS. In this framework, the design of SDS is optimized thereby minimizing its entire weight and joint displacements and maximizing its member forces at the same time. The design constraints are borrowed from the provisions of American Petroleum Institute (API RP2A-LRFD) specification. A multi-objective optimization algorithm (MOA) named Pareto Archived Genetic Algorithm (PAGA), as an optimization tool is integrated by an automatic dome generating tool. Therefore, the novelty of this study comes from being the first attempt to obtain the optimal design in a way of integrating both member and joint-related design constraints by the geometrically nonlinear structural analysis. Consequently, it is displayed that that the proposed optimal design approach facilitates to determine an appropriate optimal design through a tradeoff analysis for designers depending on their preferences. The design concepts concerned with buckling, axial stress, combination of axial & bending, and yielding have the higher dominant effects in the optimal design of SDS. Furthermore, it is also demonstrated that the inclusion of diagonal members into the design of SDS provides a reduction in the violation of dominant design constraints.

This paper firstly analyzes the features of the spring-loaded type guide mechanism of D51 series vertical ring rolling mill. Then a reliable parametric virtual prototyping model of the guide mechanism is developed in software ADAMS. In addition, the optimal design of the guide mechanism is conducted. The minimum spring force is selected as the objective function, the dimensions of the parts of the guide mechanism are set to the design variables and the working condition is taken as the design constraints. The optimal guide mechanism is obtained after optimization, compared with the original structure, the spring force is decreased by 50.5%, and the guiding force is also decreased to a reasonable value. The research results can help to design the guide mechanism of the D51 series vertical ring rolling mill.

Topology optimization and shape optimization of structural optimization techniques are applied to transport skate the lightweight. Skate properties by varying the design variables and minimize the maximum stress and strain in the normal operation, while reducing the volume of the objective function of optimal design and Skate the static strength of the constraints that should not degrade compared to the performance of the initial model. The skates were used in this study consists of the main frame, sub frame, roll, pin main frame only structural analysis and optimal design was performed using the finite element method. Simplified initial model set design area and it compared to SM45C, AA7075, CFRP, GFRP was using the topology optimization. Strength does not degrade compared to the initial model, decreased volume while minimizing the stress and strain results, the optimum design was achieved efficient lightweight.

The system designed to accomplish the engraving process of a rotating band projectile is called the gun engraving system. To obtain higher performance, the optimal design of the size parameters of the gun engraving system was carried out. First, a fluid–solid coupling computational model of the gun engraving system was built and validated by the gun launch experiment. Subsequently, three mathematic variable values, like performance evaluation indexes, were obtained. Second, a sensitivity analysis was performed, and four high-influence size parameters were selected as design variables. Finally, an optimization model based on the affine arithmetic was set up and solved, and then the optimized intervals of performance evaluation indexes were obtained. After the optimal design, the percent decrease of the maximum engraving resistance force ranged from 6.34% to 18.24%; the percent decrease of the maximum propellant gas temperature ranged from 1.91% to 7.45%; the percent increase of minimum pressure wave of the propellant gas ranged from 0.12% to 0.36%.

A series of tests was conducted to provide data for the design of premixing-prevaporizing fuel-air mixture preparation systems for aircraft gas turbine engine combustors. Fifteen configurations of four different fuel-air mixture preparation system design concepts were evaluated to determine fuel-air mixture uniformity at the system exit over a range of conditions representative of cruise operation for a modern commercial turbofan engine. Operating conditions, including pressure, temperature, fuel-air ratio, and velocity had no clear effect on mixture uniformity in systems which used low-pressure fuel injectors. However, performance of systems using pressure atomizing fuel nozzles and large-scale mixing devices was shown to be sensitive to operating conditions. Variations in system design variables were also evaluated and correlated. Mixture uniformity improved with increased system length, pressure drop, and number of fuel injection points per unit area. A premixing system compatible with the combustor envelope of a typical combustion system and capable of providing mixture nonuniformity (standard deviation/mean) below 15% over a typical range of cruise operating conditions was demonstrated.

In this paper, a new configuration of Crank-Rocker (CR) model has been proposed by duplicating its mechanism. The method has been implemented to overcome vibration problem on a single-piston Crank-Rocker engine caused by system unbalance. The new method suggests combining conventional method of adding counterweights to reduce shaking forces and eliminating the inertial moments on system by implementing the new layout. A dynamic study of the new model is presented, then the objective function is derived and implemented to perform the optimization process. Related design variables and system constraints are introduced to determine attached counterweights optimized characteristics. For results validation, the simulation, dynamic analysis, and optimization process were conducted using ADAMS VIEW® software. The output results were presented and discussed to verify the validity of the suggested method. It was noticed that the method was very effective and has managed to reduce the total shaking forces by about 91%, shaking moment by about 66%; and the driving torque by 27%.

Abstract A method is developed for the optimal design of composite links based on dynamic performance criteria directly related to structural modal damping and dynamic stiffness. An integrated mechanics theory correlates structural composite damping to the parameters of basic composite material systems, laminate parameters, link shape, and modal deformations. The inclusion of modal properties allows the selective minimization of vibrations associated with specific modes. Ply angles and fiber volumes are tailored to obtain optimal combinations of damping and stiffness. Applications to simple composite links indicate wide margins for trade-offs and illustrate the importance of various design variables to the optimal design.

An automotive gear differential is a joint-fractionated planetary gear train with two degrees-of-freedom. We summarize the characteristics of planetary gear trains and the design constraints of noncoupled automotive gear differentials to synthesize their corresponding kinematic graphs. Based on these graphs and the proposed respecializing process, we generate the atlas of design concepts for automotive gear differentials with any types of gear pairs. As a result, there are 4, 25, and 156 design concepts for five-, six-, and seven-bar automotive gear differentials, respectively.
