As a rapidly ageing population becomes an increasingly serious social challenge for Chinese megacities, issues affecting older adults’ subjective well-being (SWB) attract greater concern. However, it is difficult to gain a comprehensive understanding of older adults’ SWB, since most SWB theories focus only on specific factors. Moreover, residential environmental factors are hardly considered in studies of older adults’ SWB. In this paper we therefore investigate the effects of residential environment and individual resources on the SWB of older adults in Shanghai, using the integrative theoretical framework proposed by Lindenberg. We investigate the relationships between resources (residential environment and individual resources), needs satisfaction and SWB using multiple regression analysis. Our results show that the residential environment exerts a stronger impact on SWB than individual resources. Good quality residential building, good accessibility to medical and financial facilities, higher economic status of a neighbourhood, and a lower proportion of older adults in a neighbourhood are important environmental correlates of SWB. Health appears to be the most significant individual resource; other important individual resources include household income, a high-skilled occupation, a job in the public sector and living with grandchildren. Comfort is the most important basic need for older adults.

This article examines the peculiarities of formation of residential areas along the Chinese Eastern Railway (CER); analyzes the pattern of settlements; and examines the architectural nuances of residential buildings. The object of this research is the architectural urban development peculiarities of Russian railroad stations on the territory of Northern Manchuria. The subject of this research is the residential environment in the settlements along the Chinese Eastern Railway. The chronological framework covers the first three decades of the XX century: beginning of construction and first years of exploitation of the railway, characterized by active urban development process and creation of full-fledged environment for accommodation of construction workers, railway workers, migrants from Russia, Southern Manchuria and mainland China. The theoretical foundation for this study consists in the systemic-axiological approach, according to which the culture defines the system of materialistic and spiritual values passed from one generation to another, and allows determining the value grounds of cultural interaction and its panhuman significance. The work explores the peculiarities of architecture and urban development in the settlements along CER. Study is carried out on the construction process of the railway and living conditions of first workers, approaches towards design of the stations of the main line and the southern branch, as well as architecture of residential building of the settlements. The author considers the impact of Russian environment upon the existing Chinese cities, and the use of the traditional Chinese approaches in the projects by the Russian engineers and architects.

Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) is the air quality in or around a building that can affect the comfort and health of building occupants. Polluted air contains toxic gases emitted by industry, vehicle emissions, and increased concentrations of harmful gases and particles in the atmosphere. The use of IoT can monitor IAQ reading levels and update IAQ real-time information parameters at different locations in the residential environment for the comfort and health of the occupants. The focus of this work is to measure the level of carbon monoxide (CO) as well as other important parameters such as temperature and relative humidity (RH) as recommended by ASHRAE 55-1992 and MS:1525. The developed system was built using NodeMCU as a microcontroller, MQ-7 to measure CO levels, and DHT22 sensor to measure the humidity and temperature levels. The experiment was conducted in a residential building located in Paya Jaras Tengah, Sungai Buloh, Selangor. The developed system was measured in three different locations, namely the living room, kitchen, and bedroom. In the morning, as the RH increased, the temperature also increased. Since the living room is located nearby the main road, the CO reading was higher than the other two locations, in which the highest value of 12 ppm was recorded. The results obtained showed that the system works well and can record the readings of RH, temperature, and CO level in the residential environment. Therefore, a reliable system can be developed to help the residential occupants monitor the level of IAQ in the house.

High residential living in Malaysia has not been widely given a significant emphasises in literature despite its increasing scale and significance in the real estate market. The significance of high rise is mainly due the increasing rate of migration from rural to urban. It is estimated a total of 77.2 percent of the Malaysian population lived in urban areas in 2020. Approximately, 30 percent of this urban population lives in strata housing. These percentages are predicted to continue to increase in the future. The emergence of high residential building has been argued as confronting various problems which has considerable impact on this life style. Satisfaction is an important outcome of living in one’s dwelling, although it is not the only consideration. High residential building in Malaysia encountered numerous problems in term of management aspects, legislation aspects, and residents’ satisfaction. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the tenants’ satisfaction living in high residential buildings in Klang Valley. The questionnaires survey is conducted amongst 276 tenants at low cost and medium cost HRB using random sampling in HRB located at areas under jurisdiction Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL), Majlis Bandaraya Subang Jaya (MBSJ), Majlis Bandaraya Shah Alam (MBSA), Majlis Bandaraya Subang Jaya (MBSJ), Majlis Perbandaran Selayang (MPS) and Majlis Perbandaran Ampang Jaya (MPAJ). The result from this study shows that tenant in medium cost residential building are more satisfied in term of facilities and management as compared to tenants in low cost residential building. Tenants also not disclosed to the existing act and procedure related to high residential building. In conclusion, this study suggested the Local Authority to emphasise the role of tenant. These recommendation hopefully will increase the level of satisfaction amongst the residents in HRB.

The installation of an internal partition has resulted in lowering the illumination level inside a building. Therefore, this study is intended to evaluate the effects of several internal partition layout on indoor daylighting performance in student residential rooms. Several options of internal partition were simulated using Climate Based Daylight Modelling (CBDM) to suggest the effective partition layout to overcome low daylighting level inside the room at the annual level. The findings indicate that the internal partition perpendicular to the window layout has been proven to have the highest annual daylight sufficiency in a student residential room in the tropics.
