Adequate information on agricultural land suitability for viticulture are important for the expansion of the activity in wine producing regions, as the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil. This information contributes to improve the efficiency of evaluations, with the inclusion of different management levels for the crop and redefinition of limiting levels of agricultural land conditions. In this context, the objective of this work was to adapt the Land Agricultural Suitability Evaluation System (LASES) to grapevine crops grown in high-altitude regions in Santa Catarina. The LASES was modified based on the crop demands and managements, proposing the incorporation, removal, adjust and update of parameters used in the LASES. The limiting factors considered were topography, fertility, water excess or oxygen deficiency, susceptibility to erosion, impediments to meccanization, and soil effective depth. These traits were based on data of bibliographic surveys and five limiting levels were attributed to them: null, mild, moderate, strong, and very strong. Agricultural suitability classes like good, regular, restrictive and inapt resulted from the interaction between agricultural conditions and management levels of viticulture producers, and later, a suitability guide table was developed. The adaptation of the LASES to grapevine crops grown in high-altitude conditions in Santa Catarina incorporate and adjust local aspects that are important for the grapevine production system. Thus, it is an important tool for decision making when implementing new vineyards and contributes to a possible increase of this activity in the region.

Purpose In order to offer a theoretical and empirical contribution to the theme, the purpose of this paper is to assess the tourist image of the destination Balneário Camboriú, Santa Catarina, Brazil, from the tourists’ perspective. The authors specify the latent dimensions involved in the formation of the cognitive, affective, and conative image of coastal tourism destination, through which the authors can analyze and measure the construct. Design/methodology/approach The research is exploratory, descriptive, and predominantly quantitative. It uses non-probability convenience sampling, consisting of a sample of 425 tourists. Data collection were conducted in the studied destination during the summer season – 2015/2016. Findings Through exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, the authors identified and tested the factors that comprise the image. Structural equation model evaluated the relationship that theoretically exists between the components of the image and the weight of the various components (cognitive, affective, and conative) on the overall image of the destination. Originality/value This research contributes theoretically and empirically to the discussions on the components of the destination image, in as much as it analyzes and interprets the cognitive, affective, and conative components of the image of the tourism destination Balneário Camboriú, Santa Catarina, Brazil.

There is a lack of knowledge regarding Lepidoptera species in altitudinal grassland areas, especially in the state of Santa Catarina, in southern Brazil. Here we report some records of Vanessa braziliensis (Moore, 1883) and Urbanus zagorus (Plötz, 1880) in high altitude areas. We have likely registered both the first record of U. zagorus for the state of Santa Catarina and the highest altitudinal record of V. braziliensis in Brazil.

Background: Taper modelling and volume estimation are key procedures in the management and planning of plantedforests. The objective of this work was to evaluate the taper and volume behaviour of Pinus taeda L. species, along the stemin different ages, using the Preussner taper functions, compared to Schöpfer’s 5th-polynomial, Kozak’s and Max-Burkhart’smodels. This work focused on plantations of Pinus taeda L., due to its wide use as a source of raw material in the forestindustry of southern Brazil. Methods: The data were collected in the last 22 years from the Midwest region of Santa Catarina, of trees ranging in agefrom 3.5 to 18 years. This dataset consisted of a collection of volume sections, with relative diameter measurements alongthe stem, used in conventional forest inventory. The total volume of the trees, obtained by integrating the Preussner taperfunctions, was equated by dividing the stem into four parts, in which parabolas were fitted, and compared with the totaland merchantable volume estimated by Schöpfer’s 5th-degree polynomial, Kozak’s and Max-Burkhart’s functions. Results: Bias, RMSE and r were generally better with the application of Kozak’s model, and AIC and BIC for the Preussner’smodel. Conclusions: Kozak functions were better to provide the merchantable volume. In terms of total volume both functions,Kozak and Preussner, provided reliable estimates. The advantage of the procedure proposed by Preussner is the flexibilityof the fitted taper functions, the simplicity of volume calculations by integration, and the feasibility for interpreting theircoefficients.
