Emotional design is one of the most important methods in modern product design. It was highlighted after Donald A. Norman published his book Emotional design: why we love (or hate) everyday things. Emotional design addresses people’s needs and hopes which is in the center of the development of product design and product technology. Due to the lack of strong theoretical basis and quantitative analysis, many products can’t reach the goal of their designers with Emotional feelings, nor can consumer’s emotional understandings be similar to the designers’ emotional expectations. This paper analyzes the concept of emotional design and some difficulties which designers must to be faced in their emotional designing works, discusses on product shape design according to emotional design. On this basis, the Kansei engineering and emotional design methods are described in details.

AbstractVirtual reality (VR) offers a new instrument for food scientists to evaluate different aspects of food products. The possible applications range from product design testing, evaluation of the labels, effects of different placements or the evaluation of store layouts. These analyses help us to get a deeper understanding of consumers' minds. Additionally, VR can be coupled by several different tools (e.g. eye-trackers or skin conductance sensors or even electroencephalographs). However, as there have been only a limited number of applications published, there are several open questions which need to be answered. In the presented paper the authors aim i) to introduce the current knowledge on VR applications in food science by introducing several fields of applications and ii) to point out the most important questions regarding the applications of VR in food science.

User experience has a significant impact on the effective product design and improvement, especially for a personalized product to meet user’s individual need. The development of personalized products requires data from user experience in the evaluation of the product function and performance. The existing methods of Internet-based interactive platforms and direct market user surveys cannot provide users full experience of product features. This research proposes a user interactive system based on virtual reality technologies to provide users a close-real experience in the development of open-architecture products. The system provides users an interface built on the virtual environment. The users can review a product design by virtually operating and evaluating the product. The system records users’ operations and feedbacks for designers to improve the product. Food trucks designed using the open-architecture concept are used as applications to verify the proposed method. A user survey is conducted to examine the system effectiveness.

Kansei Engineering is a technical methodology to translate consumer’s Kansei into product design elements. The target of this technology is to provide designers and manufacturers with a technique to master the emotional and spiritual needs of consumers and then manifest them in product design to enhance competitive edge. In light of this situation and on the basis of finishing a lot of English literature reading about this technology, the author conducted systematical study about Kansei Engineering in this thesis with the aim to enhance understanding of it for domestic designers and accelerate spread of it. Basing on the study about the situations of China’s domestic design industry, the author analyzed several points that China’s design industry should learn from Japan and Kansei Engineering technology, and proposed a simplified Kansei Engineering Model which is easier to execute and suitable for domestic design industry. In conclusion, this paper gives an introduction to the theory of Kansei Engineering system, and explores the relationship between consumer's desire and massage chair design factor with the SD (Semantic Differential) method, providing effective reference for the massage chair design.
