Telemedicine has been available for healthcare systems to assist patient care for many years; however, it was not until recently that the field of telemedicine exploded. Inconsistent coverage of telemedicine services as well as a general level of unfamiliarity with the technology required to perform telemedicine services contributed to the lack of its widespread use. The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic drove the institution of telemedicine in all areas of healthcare. Healthcare institutions around the world adapted both inpatient and outpatient services in order to utilise telemedicine. The implementation of telemedicine can partly be attributed to the expansion of insurance coverage as well as the relaxation of technology requirements to avoid Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) violations. During the global pandemic, telemedicine helped to preserve personal protective equipment during a worldwide shortage, protect healthcare workers from being infected, and allowed the monitoring of patients’ chronic conditions without putting them at risk by attending medical settings. The COVID-19 outbreak has highlighted the advantages that telemedicine has to offer and has served as the push many health systems needed to implement telemedicine services more widely across these institutions. This article highlights the role of telemedicine during the ongoing COVID-19 global pandemic.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has been reported as an efficacious modality that can enhance the process of wound healing and tissue regeneration and has been validated in different medical settings, including cardiovascular surgery, otolaryngology, head and neck surgery, and maxillofacial surgery. In dental and oral surgery settings, PRP has been reported as an efficacious approach with favorable outcomes in different settings. Some of these procedures include surgical repair of the alveolar cleft, mandibular reconstruction, ablative surgical procedures, placement of osseointegrated implants, periodontal plastic surgery, and management of infrabony periodontal defects. In the present study, we aim to discuss the role and mechanisms that PRP plays in the settings of maxillofacial surgery based on evidence from the relevant studies in the literature. Evidence indicates the wide acceptance of the modality, which has been proven to increase the rate of wound healing and reduce the frequency of pain and swelling. The administration of PRP has been reported to dispense with the need for invasive approaches that might be furtherly associated with complications and different morbidities. However, in most of the favorable events where the PRP administration of was associated with enhanced outcomes, the modality was used in combination with another therapeutic approach. Therefore, further research is needed to validate the efficacy of the modality in the different settings.

Acupuncture and related techniques are increasingly practiced in conventional medical settings, and the number of patients willing to use these techniques is increasing. Despite more than 30 yr of research, the exact mechanism of action and efficacy of acupuncture have not been established. Furthermore, most aspects of acupuncture have yet to be adequately tested. Therefore, considerable controversy remains about the role of acupuncture in clinical medicine. Acupuncture apparently does not reduce volatile anesthetic requirement by a clinically important amount. However, preoperative sedation seems to be a promising application of acupuncture in perioperative settings. Acupuncture may be effective for postoperative pain relief but requires a high level of expertise by the acupuncture practitioner. Acupuncture and related techniques can be used for treatment and prophylaxis of postoperative nausea and vomiting in routine clinical practice in combination with or as an alternative to conventional antiemetics when administered before induction of general anesthesia.

Beliefs and expectations about treatment have been shown to significantly impact treatment outcomes in medical settings. However, researchers have seldom examined the role of beliefs within the context of cognitive behavioral therapy. Beliefs may be particularly salient for safety behavior (SB) use in exposure therapy, as clinicians often hold opinions about whether judicious SB use facilitates or inhibits treatment. These beliefs may consequently be relayed during psychoeducation, influencing client expectations of SB helpfulness and exposure efficacy. We investigated experimentally the influence of SB beliefs on working memory, speech predictions, speech duration, anxiety, performance, and speech acceptability. Speech anxious undergraduate participants ( N = 144) received psychoeducation on exposure and were told (using random assignment) either that SBs: increase anxiety (unhelpful), decrease anxiety (helpful), or were provided with no information on SBs (control). People in the helpful condition only believed the exposure would be more successful. Crucially, exposure expectancy mediated the relationship between the helpful (but not unhelpful) condition and willingness to engage in future exposures. There were no effects of condition on most cognitive, emotional, or behavioral outcomes, suggesting that SBs (and SB beliefs) may have less impact on exposure outcomes than is currently believed.
