Abstract Fear appeals are designed to inspire intended and actual actions to avert a danger. Although prior meta-analyses report that the average effect of fear appeals is moderately positive, the role of efficacy information is not completely understood. Prior work and fear appeal theories have argued that the presence of both response and self-efficacy information improves fear appeal success but the individual impacts of each have not been properly estimated. A meta-analysis (k = 158, N = 19,736) was conducted to examine the individual and combined effects of response and self-efficacy information contained in fear appeals on behavioral intentions and behaviors. Estimating the impact of fear appeals relative to low and no fear controls, the meta-analysis showed that fear appeals had a stronger influence on behavioral outcomes when they included positive response efficacy information but did not vary as a function of including self-efficacy information or negative response efficacy information.

AbstractRecent empirical research has shown that improving socio-emotional skills such as grit, conscientiousness and self-control leads to higher academic achievement and better life outcomes. However, both theoretical and empirical works have raised concerns about the reliability of the different methods used to measure socio-emotional skills. We compared the reliability and validity of the three leading measurements methods—a student-reported questionnaire, a teacher-reported questionnaire, and a behavioral task—in a sample of 3997 French students. Before analyzing the data, we polled 114 international researchers in cognitive development and education economics; most researchers in both fields predicted that the behavioral task would be the best method. We found instead that the teacher questionnaire was more predictive of students’ behavioral outcomes and of their grade progression, while the behavioral task was the least predictive. This work suggests that researchers may not be using optimal tools to measure socio-emotional skills in children.

This study aimed to advance our understanding of 5-year-olds’ behavioral difficulties by modeling and testing both mediational protective and risk pathways simultaneously. Drawing on two national samples from different Western European countries—the United Kingdom (13,053) and Germany (2,022), the proposed model considered observed sensitive parental interactive behaviors and tested child vocabulary as protective pathways connecting parental education with children’s behavioral outcomes; the risk pathways focused on negative parental disciplinary practices linking (low) parental education, parental distress, and children’s difficult temperament to children’s behavioral difficulties. Further, the tested model controlled for families’ income as well as children’s sex and formal child care attendance. Children with comparatively higher educated parents experienced more sensitive interactive behavior, had more advanced vocabulary, and exhibited fewer behavioral difficulties. Children with a comparatively higher level of difficult temperament or with parents who suffered from distress tended to experience more negative disciplinary behavior and exhibited more behavioral difficulties. Additionally, children’s vocabulary skills served as a mechanism mediating the association between parental education and children’s behavioral difficulties. Overall, we found similar patterns of results across the United Kingdom and Germany with both protective and risk pathways contributing simultaneously to children’s behavioral development. The findings suggest that promoting parents’ sensitive interactive behaviors, favorable disciplinary practices, and child’s vocabulary skills have potential for preventing early behavioral difficulties.

Chronic stress is a major risk factor for psychiatric illnesses, including depression; however, the pathophysiological mechanisms whereby stress leads to mood disorders remain unclear. The recent FDA approval of antidepressants with novel mechanisms of action, like Zulresso®, a synthetic neuroactive steroid analog with molecular pharmacology similar to allopregnanolone, has spurred interest in new therapeutic targets and, potentially, novel pathophysiological mechanisms for depression. Allopregnanolone acts as a positive allosteric modulator of GABAA receptors (GABAARs), acting preferentially at δ subunit-containing receptors (δ-GABAARs). Accumulating clinical and preclinical evidence supports the antidepressant effects of exogenous administration of allopregnanolone and allopregnanolone analogs; however, the role of endogenous neurosteroids in the pathophysiology of depression remains unknown. Here, we examine whether altered neurosteroid signaling may contribute to behavioral deficits following chronic unpredictable stress (CUS) in mice. We first identified reductions in expression of δ-GABAARs, the predominant site of action of 5a-reduced neuroactive steroids, following CUS. Additionally, utilizing LC-MS/MS we discovered a decrease in levels of allopregnanolone in the BLA, but not plasma of mice following CUS, an indication of impaired neurosteroid synthesis. CRISPR knockdown the rate-limiting enzymes involved in allopregnanolone synthesis, 5α-reductase type 1 and 2, in the BLA mimicked the behavioral deficits associated with CUS in mice. Furthermore, overexpression expression of 5α-reductase type 1 and 2 in the BLA improved behavioral outcomes. Collectively, this suggests chronic stress impairs endogenous neurosteroid signaling in the BLA which is sufficient to induce behavioral deficits similar to those observed following CUS. Further, these studies suggest that the therapeutic efficacy of allopregnanolone-based treatments may be due to their ability to directly target the underlying pathophysiology of mood disorders. Therefore, targeting endogenous neurosteroidogenesis may offer a novel therapeutic strategy for the treatment of mood disorders.

Gamification, a popular tool widely used in various contexts such as marketing, education, and organizations, among others, has demonstrated its potential for engaging, motivating, and achieving behavioral change in the targeted audience. For an ideal gamification system, it is necessary to know how the gamification elements affect human emotions. This chapter conducts a journey through gamified contexts and their psychological impacts on individuals. This chapter gathers up the different threads of gamification in the marketing context. The three important objectives fulfilled by this chapter would be that it provides information about the topic of gamification and the psychological perspectives behind its operation; discusses its application in various marketing contexts, such as digital marketing and online payment sites; and finally, investigates various behavioral outcomes of gamification.

Abstract When social media influencers (SMIs) post sponsored content, it should be recognizable as such. However, there is no European Union-wide legislation governing sponsorship transparency, and monitoring practices differ significantly across member states. In Romania, where we conducted our study, such regulations are only just emerging, and there are weak monitoring policies regarding advertising disclosure on SMI branded posts. In this study, we examined how two different types of advertising disclosure commonly used on Instagram are likely to affect consumers’ behavioral outcomes, such as purchase intention and intention toward the SMI, mediated by the activation of conceptual persuasion knowledge (CPK), via negative affect and the trustworthiness of the SMI. We conducted a three-level between-subjects online experiment (N=248), manipulating the absence versus the presence of advertising, which came in one of two types, brand-unspecific (#ad, #sponsoredpost) and brand-specific (paid partnership with [brand]). Considering the mediation path via the trustworthiness of the SMI, findings suggest that the paid partnership disclosure had positive outcomes for purchase intention and intention toward the SMI.

Mindfulness has rapidly become a significant subject area in many disciplines. Most of the work on mindfulness has focused on the perspective of health and healthcare professionals, but relatively less research is focused on the organizational outcomes at the workplace. This review presents a theoretical and practical trajectory of mindfulness by sequential integration of recent fragmented scholarly work on mindfulness at the workplace. The review showcases that most contemporary practical challenges in organizations, such as anxiety, stress, depression, creativity, motivation, leadership, relationships, teamwork, burnout, engagement, performance, well-being, and physical and psychological health, could be addressed successfully with the budding concept of mindfulness. The causative processes due to higher mindfulness that generate positive cognitive, emotional, physiological, and behavioral outcomes include focused attention, present moment awareness, non-judgmental acceptance, self-regulatory functions, lower mind wandering, lower habit automaticity, and self-determination. Employee mindfulness could be developed through various mindfulness interventions in order to improve different organizational requirements, such as psychological capital, emotional intelligence, prosocial behavior, in-role and extra-role performance, financial and economic performance, green performance, and well-being. Accordingly, this review would be beneficial to inspire academia and practitioners on the transformative potential of mindfulness in organizations for higher performance, well-being, and sustainability. Future research opportunities and directions to be addressed are also discussed.
