Pedogeomorphic Analysis in Land Resource Inventory: A Case Study from Central India

A land resource inventory (LRI) of Bisarahalli-1 microwatershed was located in the central part of northern Karnataka in semiarid region of Koppal taluk and district. A case study was taken under Sujala III project sponsored by the Watershed Development Department of Karnataka and funded by the World Bank. The analysis and interpretation of the spatial and non-spatial database generated has revealed that most of the areas suffer from major problems. In most of the areas, very gently sloping and alkalinity affected even up to 80% of the microwatershed area followed by gravelly and low available water capacity, thus reducing the production potential and crop choices. The soils are either moderately or marginally suited for growing most of the agricultural and horticultural crops. By interfacing land resource data with Remote Sensing, GIS and GPS, different management scenarios were analysed to arrive at the best management alternatives (optimum land use plans) that would be most suitable. This data handling system will be useful for making land use decisions and providing proactive advice to farmers on a real time basis protecting the health of natural resources.

Land resource inventory (LRI) at larger scale (1:10000) is the basic prerequisite to develop agricultural land use planning for upgrading the socioeconomic condition of the farmers. In the present era of climate change and huge demand for food, the agriculture in India is under severe stress, which might be improved through a judicious land resource inventory followed by a robust agricultural land use planning. Moreover, site specific land management options must be framed to provide right technology at right time in right place. Thus, with this aim, a methodology of LRI at 1:10000 scale have been developed using geospatial technique for preparation of landscape ecological map (LEU) as base map. The detailed information generated in GIS environment has been used in the field for detailed ground truthing and land resource inventory for farm planning. The detailed methodology has been presented through a case study considering Rajnagar block of Birbhum distrct, West Bengal for doing LRI at 1:10000 scale

Forest landscape restoration is a widely accepted approach to sustainable forest management. In addition to revitalizing degraded sites, forest landscape restoration can increase the supply of sustainable timber and thereby reduce logging in natural forests. The current study presents a spatial land use optimization model and utilizes a linear programming algorithm that integrates timber production and timber processing chains to meet timber demand trade-offs and timber supply. The objective is to maximize yield and profit from forest plantations under volatile timber demands. The model was parameterized for a case study in Thai Nguyen Province, Vietnam, where most forest plantations grow Acacia mangium (A. mangium). Data were obtained from field surveys on tree growth, as well as from questionnaires to collect social-economic information and determine the timber demand of local wood processing mills. The integration of land use and wood utilization approaches reduces the amount of land needed to maintain a sustainable timber supply and simultaneously leads to higher yields and profits from forest plantations. This forest management solution combines economic and timber yield aspects and promotes measures focused on economic sustainability and land resource efficiency.
