This paper presents one case study of state-sponsored cultural activities that occurred throughout 2014, Turkmenistan's Year of Magtymguly, the 290th anniversary of this Turkmen poet's birth. Such activities constitute examples of public culture; they can organize representations of a society's past and present to reaffirm for participants the values and power structure of their society and revalidate its philosophical underpinnings. After examining this Turkic poet's iconicity, this paper compiles 2014's celebratory events from disparate sources, complementing broader general literature on Central Asia's spectacles of public culture and their role in nation-building and identity-formation. Rather than merely resulting from any top-down decision specifying required activities nationwide, the year's events involved numerous synergies as artists, museum and theater administrators, composers, and other cultural-sector workers benefited by responding to the potential of aligning their work with a theme as broad, as widely appreciated, and as eligible for various forms of support as this one. In addition, Turkmenistan's strong central leadership benefited from this widely shared and highly visible celebration, especially emphasizing one element within Magtymguly's eighteenth-century vision, an end to his people's tribal conflicts within a unified Turkmenistan under one leader.

Language is also able to reflect one’s culture. One example of cultural activities is the procession found in the traditional Batak Toba wedding, namely marhata sinamot (the dowry bargaining). This research on politeness strategies in marhat a sinamot activities was a qualitative descriptive research. The data has been obtained through conversations delivered when the spokesmen discussing or negotiating the amount of the dowry. The research site is in Sidamanik Sub-District. The total number of spokespersons who have participated in this study is 30, and this has been obtained from 5 recordings of the marhata sinamot activities. Almost all of the spokesmen are farmers, some of them are retiredmen and traders. Their ages are between 45-70. The findings show that the politeness strategies used by the speakers in marhata sinamot are positive politeness strategies, which are exaggerating (interest, sympathy, etc with the hearer), seeking for agreement, giving hearer sympathy, using in-group identity markers, and asserting speaker’s knowledge of and concerning for hearer’s wants. Negative politeness strategies are also used, namely: asking for empathy, minimizing the imposition, apologizing, and giving deference. The sociocultural condition of a speaker affects the speech they produce. The cultural principles of the Toba Batak community regarding ‘somba marhula-hula, manat mardongan tubu and elek marboru’ in a principle of daliha na tolu have also influenced the language and politeness strategies used by speakers. These findings can be a logical answer that culture influences language. Keywords: Language, Toba Batak, culture, dalihan na tolu, politeness strategies.

(Re-)constructing Narrative – Acting in Public Space – Education. Post‑memory of the Holocaust of Lublin Jews: A Case Study Although originally the term ‘post-memory’ referred to the experiences and memories of the survivors that influenced the biographies of their children, in the following years its meaning was extended and the concept started to be used to describe the processes of transmitting the memory of any traumatic experience within any group, not necessarily bound by blood. In the case of Lublin, where one third of the pre-war community consisted of Jews, most of whom were murdered during World War II, the position of non-Jewish vicarious witnesses seems to be particularly important. This article discusses some aspects of the Holocaust post-memory discourse referring to the cultural activities of the ‘Grodzka Gate – NN Theatre’ Centre. Research questions will concern the artistic language and means of expression of these projects as well as the aesthetic codes that are being used by vicarious witnesses.

Abstract: This case study was conducted by researchers engaged in “Understanding the Strengths of Indigenous Communities,” a research project involving five participating First Nations (see http://www.usic.ca). This particular study describes the centrality of cultural activities and beliefs in strengthening the community of the Batchewana First Nation. Deploying an innovative form of methodology, which stresses community participation in the development of the research process for the purposes of decolonization, the article explores how this community approaches culture from a holistic worldview. The findings suggest that cultural renewal is self-reinforcing and cumulative, and plays a key role in overcoming collective trauma, but that these benefits can be jeopardized through a lack of resources.

Abstract The contention of this article is that some cultural emphases shift in response to changing socio-economic realities, in order to serve specific socio-economic interests. This paper examines, through the prism of the cultural activities and ideologies of some Beiruti merchants, their contribution to the process of the Arabic nahḍa, enlarging on their conceptual endowment to the process of modernization. The paper sheds new light on several aspects of the merchants’ cultural contribution by emphasizing the strong link they forged between culture and economy, focusing on the merchants’ activities and writings, especially those of Salīm Bustrus, here presented as a case study.
