Given the increase in the number of interpretive research articles being published in IS today, we believe it is timely to develop and explain a classification scheme of the literature. Such a classification scheme draws attention to the tremendous variety and breadth of interpretive research today, from the most abstract and general philosophical foundations to the most in-depth, detailed field studies. The explicit consideration of different types may contribute to a more effective division of labor among scholars with different research interests. It should also help interpretive researchers to better focus their work and to identify their research priorities.

This paper argues that interpretive researchers need to consciously adopt a critical and reflective stance in relation to the role that the information technologies which they describe play in maintaining social orders and power relations in organizations. The concern of the paper is to highlight potential shortcomings in the treatment of technology in interpretive research on information systems, but also to present a specific approach to studying information technology and organization which may overcome these weaknesses. By utilizing a perspective drawn from the discursive and disciplinary work of Foucault and recent work on the sociology of technology, we can complement the thick description of interpretive research with the broader sweep of critical social theory.

There is increasing interest in hermeneutics as a research approach in the field of information systems. However, the problem facing researchers is that there is a paucity of information on the application of hermeneutics for empirical research in the social sciences; indeed, there is very little guidance on what exactly constitutes a hermeneutic method for the investigation of social phenomena. In order to address this problem, this paper provides an overview of concepts and principles from the related philosophies of phenomenology and hermeneutics; it then illustrates their application in an interpretive case study on the information systems development process. The insights obtained from the application of the hermeneutic method outlined in this paper have helped realize the study's objective of illustrating the link between phenomenological hermeneutics and the conduct of interpretive research.

This chapter introduces interpretive research as a background to research that is time-and context-dependent. The study presents practical, yet theoretical research approaches that are relevant to postgraduate studies and to ad-hoc research. The models proposed as interpretive research designs are development research, design-science research, and design-based research. Systems development, in and of itself, is not research, but when integrated with evaluation and applied both to solve real-world problems and to propose general design principles, it gives rise to development research. Design research – termed design-science research in the domain of information systems (where it has roots in software engineering) and design-based research in educational technology (where the approaches are more pragmatic) – has clearly defined features and methods in each domain respectively. The common attributes are the generation of creative and innovative artifacts to serve in complex situations, and the joint advancement of theory and practice.
