In the society of the XXI century it is generally accepted that a new intangible resource of organizations is knowledge, in addition to the other existing resources: human, capital, raw materials and equipment. This is particularly true in a knowledge-based society and economy, where knowledge has become an invaluable medium for all organizations, particularly businesses. The objective of this paper is to make a diagnosis to describe how to apply knowledge management in the family business Campechanas la Escondida de la Trinidad. This project is based on a case study methodology, with a descriptive type of research; the collection of information uses as instruments with a qualitative approach, observation and interviewing. The results obtained show a dependence on the tacit knowledge possessed by bakers who apply in the artisanal process, in addition to family members, lack human talent management, formal training and innovation, which has limited their competitiveness.

Many researchers believe that tacitness of knowledge contributes to incomplete knowledge flow. In this article, the authors focus on obtaining the required mechanical and electrical tacit knowledge for architectural conceptual design purpose by observing activities of a design team involved in a green building project. The authors used the case study research methodology to demonstrate how the authors could utilize Macmillan's conceptual design framework and integrate it with the structure of repertory grid technique to obtain a framework of knowledge-based conceptual design for a green building project. The contribution of this study is developing a technique for capturing tacit knowledge during the conceptual design process that leads to an improvement in knowledge movements during the architectural conceptual design stage.

Knowledge-based Engineering (KBE) should be introduced into the field of mechanical part modeling. The knowledge-based and featured mechanical part modeling is proposed based on the two layers of knowledge base. Features and process planning rules for mechanical parts are integrated and explicit knowledge and tacit knowledge are involved in this model. Explicit knowledge includes basic information, shape feature, precision feature, material feature and assemble feature, and tacit knowledge includes process rule-based reasoning and process feasibility analysis. The model proposed will help to the following process planning and play a very important role to improve the success rate of design mechanical parts. Finally a case study is conducted.

Cyberphysical system design automation utilizing knowledge based engineering techniques with globally networked knowledge bases can tremendously improve the design process for emerging systems. Our goal is to develop a comprehensive architectural framework to improve the design process for cyberphysical systems (CPS) and implement a case study with Axiomatic Design Solutions Inc. to develop next generation toolsets utilizing knowledge-based engineering (KBE) systems adapted to multiple domains in the field of CPS design automation. The Cyberphysical System Design Automation Framework (CPSDAF) will be based on advances in CPS design theory based on current research and knowledge collected from global sources automatically via Semantic Web Services. A case study utilizing STEM students is discussed.

AbstractMaintenance decision making is an important part of managing the costs, effectiveness and risk of maintenance. One way to improve maintenance efficiency without affecting the risk picture is to group maintenance jobs. Literature includes many examples of algorithms for the grouping of maintenance activities. However, the data is not always available, and with increasing plant complexity comes increasingly complex decision requirements, making it difficult to leave the decision making up to algorithms.This paper suggests a framework for the standardisation of maintenance data as an aid for maintenance experts to make decisions on maintenance grouping. The standardisation improves the basis for decisions, giving an overview of true variance within the available data. The goal of the framework is to make it simpler to apply tacit knowledge and make right decisions.Applying the framework in a case study showed that groups can be identified and reconfigured and potential savings easily estimated when maintenance jobs are standardised. The case study enabled an estimated 7%-9% saved on the number of hours spent on the investigated jobs.

AbstractThis paper proposes a semantic framework for Business Model evaluation and its application to a real case study in the context of smart energy and sustainable mobility. It presents an ontology based representation of an original business model and examples of inferential rules for knowledge extraction and automatic population of the ontology. The real case study belongs to the GreenCharge European Project, that in these last years is proposing some original business models to promote sustainable e-mobility plans. An original OWL Ontology contains all relevant Business Model concepts referring to GreenCharge’s domain, including a semantic description of TestCards, survey results and inferential rules.

Purpose Although there have been a considerable number of studies regarding subsidiary role typology in multinationals’ management literature, there appear to be few studies that consider knowledge-based role typology from the network-based perspective. The purpose of this study is to fill this gap and extend the study of Gupta and Govindarajan (1991). Thus, the study focuses on answering the following research question: Do subsidiaries have different roles in terms of knowledge flows within a multinational company (MNC)? Design/methodology/approach This empirical study has been carried out as an explorative single case study. An MNC with 15 foreign subsidiaries headquartered in Turkey, which operated in the manufacturing of household appliances and consumer electronics, has been selected as the case. Knowledge transfer is analyzed in this MNC from the network perspective. Findings Four role typologies are detected for subsidiaries of the MNC: collector transmitter, collector diffuser, converter transmitter and converter diffuser. Research limitations/implications Findings of this study are specific to this case. Testing the findings in a sample consisting of subsidiaries of MNCs producing transnational products may contribute to the generalizability of these roles. Practical implications This study offers potentially important findings for MNC managers to use. First, in this study, knowledge flows' route could be defined within MNCs’ dual network. Second, role typologies could inform MNC managers to design their MNCs’ knowledge network. Originality/value The suggested typologies are expected to more accurately define the roles of subsidiaries within contemporary MNCs which are accepted to be transformed from hierarchical structures to network-based organizations.
