Abstract This chapter provides information and data on the fatigue and fracture properties of steel, aluminum, and titanium alloys. It explains how microstructure, grain size, inclusions, and other factors affect the fracture toughness and fatigue life of these materials and the extent to which they can be optimized. It also discusses the effect of metalworking and heat treatment, the influence of loading and operating conditions, and factors such as corrosion damage that can accelerate crack growth rates.

Abstract APACHE is an air-hardening, cold-work die steel that exhibits less distortion during heat treatment than water or oil-hardening steel and many other air-hardening steels. Its low-distortion characteristic makes it attractive for applications where close size tolerance is important. This datasheet provides information on composition, physical properties, hardness, and elasticity as well as fracture toughness. It also includes information on forming, heat treating, machining, and joining. Filing Code: TS-295. Producer or source: Allegheny Ludlum Corporation.

Abstract AL TECH APACHE is an air-hardening, cold-work die steel that exhibits less distortion during heat treatment than water or oil-hardening steels and most high-alloy, air-hardening die steels. Its low-distortion characteristic makes it particulary attractive for applications where close size tolerance is important, such as master hubs, trim dies, molds for plastics, bending tools, notching dies and coining dies. This datasheet provides information on composition, physical properties, hardness, and elasticity as well as fracture toughness. It also includes information on forming, heat treating, machining, and joining. Filing Code: TS-472. Producer or source: AL Tech Specialty Steel Corporation.

Abstract AL TECH A-HT is a tool steel for difficult cold-work applications. It is somewhat similar to AISI Type A2 in alloy content but with increased wear resistance. Additions of titanium and tungsten produce hard, long-wearing carbides that help to decrease galling and metal pick-up. The main advantages of AL TECH A-HT are: (1) Very high wear resistance, (2) Good toughness, (3) Air hardening and (4) Low distortion in heat treatment. A-HT is used where better wear resistance is required than is attainable using AISI Type A2 or better toughness than AISI Type D2. This datasheet provides information on composition, physical properties, microstructure, hardness, elasticity, and compressive strength as well as fracture toughness. It also includes information on forming, heat treating, and machining. Filing Code: TS-457. Producer or source: AL Tech Specialty Steel Corporation.

Abstract N1-SPAN-C alloy 902 is an age-hardenable, nickel-iron-chromium alloy. Its outstanding characteristic is a controllable thermoelastic coefficient. Proper combination of cold work and thermal treatment can produce an essentially constant modulus of elasticity from -50 F to +150 F. The alloy is especially suitable for many types of precision equipment where elastic members are subject to temperature fluctuations. This datasheet provides information on composition, physical properties, hardness, elasticity, and tensile properties as well as fracture toughness and fatigue. It also includes information on corrosion resistance as well as forming, heat treating, machining, joining, and surface treatment. Filing Code: Fe-32. Producer or source: Huntington Alloy Products Division, An INCO Company.

Abstract ALMANITE W comprises a series of three types of austenitic-martensitic white irons characterized by high hardness and relatively good impact strength. Type W1 has a pearlitic matrix. Type W2 has a martensitic matrix, Type W4 is highly alloyed to provide an austenitic matrix in the as-cast condition which may be further modified to give a martensitic matrix by heat treatment or by refrigeration. This datasheet provides information on composition, hardness, elasticity, and tensile properties as well as fracture toughness. It also includes information on casting, heat treating, machining, and surface treatment. Filing Code: CI-42. Producer or source: Meehanite Metal Corporation.
