Modeling emission lines from the millimeter to the UV and producing synthetic spectra is crucial for a good understanding of observations, yet it is an art filled with hazards. This is the proceedings of “Walking the Line”, a 3-day conference held in 2018 that brought together scientists working on different aspects of emission line simulations, in order to share knowledge and discuss the methodology. Emission lines across the spectrum from the millimeter to the UV were discussed, with most of the focus on the interstellar medium, but also some topics on the circumgalactic medium. The most important quality of a useful model is a good synergy with observations and experiments. Challenges in simulating line emission are identified, some of which are already being worked upon, and others that must be addressed in the future for models to agree with observations. Recent advances in several areas aiming at achieving that synergy are summarized here, from micro-physical to galactic and circum-galactic scale.

Context. The globular cluster AL 3 is old and located in the inner bulge. Three individual stars were observed with the Phoenix spectrograph at the Gemini South telescope. The wavelength region contains prominent lines of CN, OH, and CO, allowing the derivation of C, N, and O abundances of cool stars. Aims. We aim to derive C, N, O abundances of three stars in the bulge globular cluster AL 3, and additionally in stars of NGC 6558 and HP 1. The spectra of AL 3 allows us to derive the cluster’s radial velocity. Methods. For AL 3, we applied a new code to analyse its colour-magnitude diagram. Synthetic spectra were computed and compared to observed spectra for the three clusters. Results. We present a detailed identification of lines in the spectral region centred at 15 555 Å, covering the wavelength range 15 525–15 590 Å. C, N, and O abundances are tentatively derived for the sample stars.

AbstractWe report on first results of computing synthetic spectra from H/He-poor accretion disks in ultracompact LMXBs. We aim at the determination of the chemical composition of the very low-mass donor star, which is the core of a former C/O white dwarf. The abundance analysis allows to draw conclusions on gravitational settling in WDs which is an important process affecting cooling times and pulsational g-mode periods.

We present first results of fully synthetic UV spectra of young starbursts. With this we mean that the spectra used to model the OB and WN stars result from unified non-LTE model atmospheres, in which stellar winds are accounted for. An important aim of this project is to construct meaningful models for young starbursts at low metallicities. We discuss the presence of He II emission as a function of maximum initial mass and age of the burst.

We compute synthetic spectra in the region around 1 μm, including the Wing-Ford band (WFB) of Iron Hydride (FeH) in the calculations. This band is known to be a good indicator of surface gravities of M stars. Employing Kurucz model atmospheres, we study the response of the intensity of the WFB to atmospheric parameters and check our results against observations of M dwarfs. This study is part of an ongoing project which aims to investigate the M dwarf-to-giant ratio in galaxies, through a population synthesis method, exploring a number of spectral indicators in the near infrared, such as the WFB, the NaI, CaII and CO near infrared features.

This paper discusses some tests of synthetic spectra used in the calculation of synthetic colours, as well as some of the problems which arise in these calculations. Synthetic colours are tested in two ways. Firstly, observed angular diameters of stars are compared with ones predicted from stellar temperatures derived from synthetic colours and the infrared flux method. The average difference is less than 2%. Secondly, a very metal-poor isochrone is transformed to the Mv, B–V and Mv, V–I colour planes and compared with observations of stars in the globular cluster M92. The agreement is good in both colour–magnitude diagrams.
