The effects of heat treatment process on the microstructure and mechanical properties of TC4 alloy were investigated. The double shear and tensile tests were carried out by using the 12mm diameter standard specimens after solution treatment at 520°С for 1.5h and water quenching, followed by aging at 480-540°С for 8h. The microstructure and facture surface were analyzed using the equipment of metallurgical microscope and scanning electron microscopy. The results show that TC4 alloy show the best comprehensive performances after solution treatment at 940°С for 1.5h, aging at 520°С for 8h; the tensile specimens display a typical ductile fracture with oval dimples of various sizes; the microstructures with clear grain boundary and obvious lamellar structure are observed at room temperature. It indicates that the excellent comprehensive properties can be obtained by controlling the grain size of primary α phase and the morphology structure and amount of the secondary α phase at optimized aging temperature.

LY12/TC4 joints have wide applications in many industrial areas such as aerospace, nuclear and chemical industries. In the present study, TC4 alloy and LY12 alloy with and without aluminum thin film was produced under low temperature of 380 oC. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the joints were investigated. The addition of the Al thin interlayer had largely improved the interfacial microstructure and shear strength of the joints. The average shear strength of LY12/Al/TC4 joints was 64.3 MPa which was 2.5 times larger than the LY12/TC4 joints’ strength. The shear fracture mainly occurred on the interface of LY12 and TC4 from the XRD result of fracture surfaces.

Abstract Microstructure and mechanical properties of GN9 Ferritic/Martensitic steel for sodium-cooled fast reactors have been investigated through orthogonal design and analysis. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), tensile and impact tests were used to evaluate the heat treatment parameters on yield strength, elongation and ductile-to-brittle transition temperature (DBTT). The results indicate that the microstructures of GN9 steel after orthogonal heat treatments consist of tempered martensite, M23C6, MX carbides and MX carbonitrides. The average prior austenite grains increase and the lath width decreases with the austenitizing temperature increasing from 1000 oC to 1080 oC. Tempering temperature is the most important factor that influences the dislocation evolution, yield strength and elongation compared with austenitizing temperature and cooling methods. Austenitizing temperature, tempering temperature and cooling methods show interactive effects on DBTT. Carbide morphology and distribution, which is influenced by austenitizing and tempering temperatures, is the critical microstructural factor that influences the Charpy impact energy and DBTT. Based on the orthogonal design and microstructural analysis, the optimal heat treatment of GN9 steel is austenitizing at 1000 oC for 0.5 h followed by air cooling and tempering at 760 oC for 1.5 h.

In metastable beta Ti alloys, microstructural features can be varied over a wide range of length scales by changing different heat treatment parameters. Effect of cooling methods on microstructure and mechanical properties of Ti-3537 alloy after solution treatment was investigated. The result shows that with the decrease of cooling rate, the Vickers hardness of the alloy gradually increases. Among the three cooling methods of OQ, AC and FC, Ti-3573 alloy has the best shape and moderate yield strength, but tensile strength. The fractography of the β-substrate specimens showed that the fracture mode was ductile fracture. In the FC state, the α phase precipitates in a large amount in the Ti-3573 alloy, the yield strength and the tensile strength are greatly increased and the elongation is remarkably lowered. The tensile fracture shows a shallow fracture dip with low toughness.
