The paper examines effectiveness of the vibration correlation technique which allows determining the buckling or limit loads by means of measured natural frequencies of structures. A steel silo segment with a corrugated wall, stiffened with cold-formed channel section columns was analysed. The investigations included numerical analyses of: linear buckling, dynamic eigenvalue and geometrically static non-linear problems. Both perfect and imperfect geometries were considered. Initial geometrical imperfections included first and second buckling and vibration mode shapes with three amplitudes. The vibration correlation technique proved to be useful in estimating limit or buckling loads. It was very efficient in the case of small and medium imperfection magnitudes. The significant deviations between the predicted and calculated buckling and limit loads occurred when large imperfections were considered.

The Imperialist Competitive Algorithm (ICA) is a novel computational method based on the concept of socio-political motivated strategy, which is usually used to solve different types of optimization problems. This paper presents the optimization of cold-formed channel section subjected to axial compression force utilizing the ICA method. The results are then compared to the Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Sequential Quadratic Programming (SQP) algorithm for validation purpose. The results obtained from the ICA method is in good agreement with the GA and SQP method in terms of weight but slightly different in the geometry shape.

Cold formed steel differ from hot rolled steel by its lesser thickness and weight. The cold formed steel applicable in roof purlin, pipe racks and wall panels etc. Due its lesser wall thickness the cold formed steel member subjected to buckling. The enhancement of load carrying capacity of the cold formed steel member can be achieved by external strengthening of CFRP. In this study cold formed channel members connected back to back to form I shaped cross section using screws. These built up beam members were 300mm, 400mm and 500mm in length with 100mm screw spacing and edge distance of 50mm were chosen for testing. CFRP fabric cut according to length, width of built up beams and wrapped outer surface of beam using epoxy resin. Experiments were carried out in two sets firstly plain built up beams and secondly CFRP wrapped beams. The test results shows that increased load carrying capacity and reduction in deflection due to CFRP strengthening. Experimental results were compared with AISI standards which are in good agreement. Experimental results shows that CFRP strengthening is economic and reliable.

An experimental and numerical study was performed to evaluate the crashworthiness of several advanced high strength steels. The behavior of two Dual Phase (DP) steels and an HSLA steel are compared by examining the crush response of longeron column specimens, experimentally and computationally. The closed section columns, fabricated by spot welding formed channel sections, in both single hat and double hat configurations were exposed to 182 kg and 454 kg axial impacts at different velocities. Final column height and impact force history were recorded and compared with results of finite element simulation of the columns. Good agreement was found between experiments and computations.
