This article contributes to the research on the expansion of the Swedish post-war road network by illuminating the role of tourism in addition to political and industrial agendas. Specifically, it examines the “conceptual construction” of the Blue Highway, which currently stretches from the Atlantic Coast of Norway, traverses through Sweden and Finland, and enters into Russia. The focus is on Swedish governmental reports and national press between the 1950s and the 1970s. The article identifies three overlapping meanings attached to the Blue Highway: a political agenda of improving the relationships between the Nordic countries, industrial interests, and tourism. Political ambitions of Nordic community building were clearly pronounced at the onset of the project. Industrial actors depended on the road for the building of power plants and dams. The road became gradually more connected with the view of tourism as the motor of regional development.

ABSTRACTThis article explores the role of different social groups in early modern Dutch towns in organising and financing poor relief. Examining both the income structure of Dutch urban poor relief organisations and voluntary donations and bequests by citizens reveals what motivations lay behind their involvement, and how and why these changed over time. In the seventeenth century, ‘middle groups’ donated more often and higher mean amounts, reflecting their efforts to contribute to urban community building. In the eighteenth century, the elite became relatively more involved in charitable giving. Also, the urge to give to one's own religious group seems to have increased in this period.

This chapter turns to the role of nostalgia in placemaking, community building, and the ways residents evaluated their local food system. In it, residents discuss self-reliance as a foundational ethos in the neighborhood’s history and also offer critiques of themselves and each other for not embodying self-reliance in the present, reflecting on the question “who is responsible?” for unequal food access. This chapter makes a claim that nostalgia plays an important role in the stories that people tell about food in the neighbourhood.

This chapter is a case study of a community-university partnership that is investigating strategies to bridge the “digital divide” by examining the role of community technology for the purpose of community building in a low- to moderate-income housing development. Since January 2000, the Camfield Estates-MIT Creating Community Connections Project, a partnership between the Camfield Tenants Association and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has taken place at Camfield Estates, a 102-unit, low- to moderate-income housing development in Roxbury, Massachusetts, and its surrounding environs. This chapter includes the history and background of the project, the theoretical frameworks guiding the initiative, the project methodology that has been employed to integrate community technology and community building, early results, and a set of recommendations and lessons learned for other initiatives.

Participatory video emerged in the late 1960s with a view to harnessing video technology in order to promote community building and develop critical awareness. It involves a wide range of practices that revolve around non-professionals collaborating in the task of making a facilitated, collective video in the topic of their choice. Consensual decision-making and iterative cycles of filmmaking alongside reflection and analysis represent milestones of traditional PV practice. Over the last 50 years, PV has fostered a heterogeneous community of practice that includes NGOs, scholars, and a number of social transformation collectives in the field of communication for development. This article examines the ways in which the PV community of practice has negotiated the emergence and hegemony of digital video-making, video equipped smartphones, and online video platforms. Methodologically, the text departs from an extended survey among experienced practitioners and focuses on case-studies involving perceived key actors within the PV community in relation to digital culture. The article also critically discusses the role of YouTube as the epitome of contemporary, digital participatory cultures. The overarching hypothesis that pervades this research foregrounds the concern that digital technology might actually be contributing to the transformation of participatory cultures into merely expressive exercises.
