AbstractFor the third-order differential equationy′″ = ƒ(t, y, y′, y″), where, questions involving ‘uniqueness implies uniqueness’, ‘uniqueness implies existence’ and ‘optimal length subintervals of (a, b) on which solutions are unique’ are studied for a class of two-point boundary-value problems.

Abstract For the 𝑛th order nonlinear differential equation 𝑦(𝑛)(𝑡) = 𝑓(𝑦(𝑡)), 𝑡 ∈ [0, 1], satisfying the multipoint conjugate boundary conditions, 𝑦(𝑗)(𝑎𝑖) = 0, 1 ≤ 𝑖 ≤ 𝑘, 0 ≤ 𝑗 ≤ 𝑛𝑖 – 1, 0 = 𝑎1 < 𝑎2 < ⋯ < 𝑎𝑘 = 1, and , where 𝑓 : ℝ → [0, ∞) is continuous, growth condtions are imposed on 𝑓 which yield the existence of at least three solutions that belong to a cone.

SynopsisWe discuss smooth changes of eigenvalues under perturbation of the boundary value problems given in the title. The simple eigenvalue criterion is developed in the setting of Banach spaces, so very general perturbations of both the differential equation and the boundary conditions are allowed. Further, we need no assumptions about self-adjointness of the original or perturbed problems. The discussion is concluded with the application of the simple eigenvalue criterion to two examples.

Dynamic equations of steady motion governing the behavior of threads over rotating arbitrary-axisymmetric rollers are derived. Various types of boundary conditions resulting in initial value or boundary value problems are discussed. Analytical solutions for the case of a circular cylinder are found. Two of the integrals obtained are exact. The third one, being a perturbation result, is thus approximate. Comparisons of results for a circular cylinder with those for tapered and parabolic rollers are made.

We prove Hartman-type and Lyapunov-type inequalities for a class of Riemann–Liouville fractional boundary value problems with fractional boundary conditions. Some applications including a lower bound for the corresponding eigenvalue problem are obtained.

We use a spectral transform method to study general boundary-value problems for third-order, linear, evolution partial differential equations with constant coefficients, posed on a finite space domain. We show how this method yields a simple characterization of the discrete spectrum of the associated spatial differential operator, and discuss the obstructions that arise when trying to represent the solution of such a problem as a series of exponential functions. We first review the theory for second-order two-point boundary-value problems, and present an alternative way to derive the classical series representation, as well as an equivalent integral representation, which generally involves complex contours. We illustrate the advantages of the integral representation by studying in some detail the case where Robin-type boundary conditions are prescribed. We then consider the third-order case and show that the integral representation is in general not equivalent to a discrete series representation, justifying a posteriori the failure of some of the classical approaches. We illustrate the third-order case in detail, using the example of the equation q t + q xxx =0 for various types of boundary conditions. In contrast with the second-order case, the qualitative properties of the spectrum of the associated spatial differential operator depend in this case not only on the equation but also on the type of boundary conditions. In particular, the solution appears to admit a series representation only when the prescribed boundary conditions couple the two endpoints of the interval.

AbstractIn this paper, we establish sufficient conditions to guarantee the existence of at least three or 2n − 1 positive solutions of nonlocal boundary value problems consisting of the second-order differential equation with p-Laplacian (1) $$[\phi _p (x'(t))]' + f(t,x(t)) = 0, t \in (0,1),$$ and one of following boundary conditions (2) $$x(0) = \int\limits_0^1 {x(s) dh(s),} \phi _p (x'(1)) = \int\limits_0^1 {\phi _p (x'(s)) dg(s)} ,$$ and (3) $$\phi _p (x'(0)) = \int\limits_0^1 {\phi _p (x'(s)) dh(s),} x(1) = \int\limits_0^1 {x(s) dg(s)} .$$ Examples are presented to illustrate the main results.

The author considers two point third order boundary value problem with asymmetric nonlinearity. The structure and oscillatory properties of solutions of the third order nonlinear autonomous ordinary differential equation are discussed. Results on the estimation of the number of solutions to boundary value problem are provided. An illustrative example is given.
