Abstract. Nocturnal urinary excretion of melatonin, LH, progesterone and oestradiol was measured by radioimmunoassay in nine normal women during a complete cycle. In addition, these hormonal excretions were studied in two women taking an oral contraceptive. A high within-subject coefficient of variation was observed for melatonin excretion in the two groups. In the nine normal cycling women, melatonin excretion was not decreased at the time of ovulation, but was significantly increased during the luteal phase compared with that of the follicular phase (P < 0.01). These data are consistent with a positive relationship between melatonin and progesterone during the luteal phase. In the two women under an oral contraceptive, melatonin excretion was found within the same range as for the other nine. The results are discussed in terms of pineal investigation in human.

The article aims to assess the possibility of ultrasound scanning and dopplerstudy in the assessment of the condition of the ovaries and endometrial in patients after long intake of COC, predicting the restoration of reproductive function after the abolition of hormonal contraception. Material and methods. In 2018-2019, 37 women were examined after the abolition of oral contraceptives, which they took for a long period of time. At the time of the examination, all the patients stopped taking COC at least 2 months ago due to the fact that they were planning a pregnancy. UW the study was conducted on the apparat Voluson E8 Expert (General Electric), improving the quality of diagnostics used Automatic assessment of follicle condition based on ultrasonic echography (Sono AVCTM follicle) and tomographic ultrasound (TUI). Results. According to the study significant changes recorded 17 patients whose menstrual cycle did not recover within the first 6 months after the cancellation of COC. In a group of 20 patients with a regular menstrual cycle, the results of the study were within normal limits, pregnancy within 6 months occurred on their own in 8 of them. Conclusion. The possibilities of 3 dimensional reconstruction and programs for evaluating the follicular apparatus significantly improve the quality of ultrasound diagnostics, give more information about the presence of small follicles, blood flow in the ovarian tissue, the structure of the cortical apparatus substances and stroma, whichis the ability of a clinician to obtain a complete understanding of the condition of the ovaries and endometrial and predicting a good health of patients. The article may be of interest to obstetricians-gynecologists, ultrasound specialists, endocrinologists, reproductive specialists.

Volunteer female psychology undergraduates ( n = 44) and nursing students ( n = 49) were asked to state the stage of their menstrual cycle immediately after completion of the Group Embedded Figures Test of perceptual disembedding. Psychology students tested during the equivalent of days 11–17 of an average 28-day cycle made more errors than those tested near the beginning or end. This relation did not hold for student nurses, whether on oral contraceptives or not. Results appear unexplained by estrogen-induced impairments of inhibition-based perceptual disembedding ability. Beliefs about menstrual-cycle effects may have increased motivation from a perceived disadvantage during menstrual and premenstrual phases and led to better performance of psychology students in these phases.

Hormonal fluctuations during the menstrual cycle may influence on muscular tensions and probably alter occlusal force. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether hormonal levels affect maximum occlusal force (MOF) of healthy women throughout the different phases of the menstrual cycle. Sixty complete dentate subjects who were not under use of oral contraceptives were selected to participate in this study. MOF was bilaterally evaluated on the molar region, during 3 complete menstrual cycles, using 5.65 mm-wide sensors. Measurements were carried out during each of the following menstrual cycle phases: menstrual, follicular, periovulatory and luteal, presumed by ovulation test. Data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Tukey-Kramer test (p<0.05). Comparisons among menstrual cycle phases showed no differences on MOF (p=0.27). Under the conditions of this study, it may be concluded that hormonal fluctuations during the menstrual cycle do not affect MOF of a sample of healthy women.

Abstract We describe a method for determination of pregnenolone, progesterone, 17alpha-hydroxyprogesterone, testosterone, and 5alpha-dihydrotestosterone in 1-2 ml of serum from male or female. Using microcolumns of Lipidex-5000 (hydroxyalkoxypropyl Sephadex, 0.5 g) and light petroleum/chloroform (97/3) as the solvent during chromatography, we resolved these five steroids into four fractions, with pregnenolone and 5alpha-dihydrotestosterone eluting together. By use of selected antibodies, the latter two steroids were also determined specifically. Use of microcolumns allowed minimization of solvent volumes and sample transfers. Consequently, blank values for all the five steroids were negligible. Lowest measureable concentrations (in ng/liter) were: pregnenolone 100, progesterone 25, 17alpha-hydroxyprogesterone 50, testosterone 25, and 5alpha-dihydrotestosterone 25. Intra-assay and inter-assay coefficients of variation ranged from 5 to 9% and 10 to 15%, respectively, for the five steroids. Serum concentrations of these steroids are given for women in the follicular and luteal phases of the menstrual cycle and for women on oral contraceptives of the combination type, as well as for normal men.
