An approach to sorptive separation of Se (IV) from solutions on a novel S,N-containing sorbent with subsequent determination of the analyte in the sorbent phase by micro-x-ray fluorescence method is presented. The sorbent copolymethylenesulfide-N-alkyl-methylenamine (CMA) was synthesized using «snake in the cage» procedure and proven to be stable in acid solutions. Conditions for quantitative extraction of Se (IV) were determined: sorption in 5 M HCl or 0.05 M HNO3 solutions when heated to 60°C, phase contact time being 1 h. The residual selenium content in the solution was determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) using 82Se isotope. The absence of selenium losses is proved and the mechanism of sorption interaction under specified conditions is proposed. The method of micro-x-ray fluorescence analysis (micro-RFA) with mapping revealed a uniform distribution of selenium on the sorbent surface. The possibility of determining selenium in the sorbent phase by micro-RFA is shown. When comparing the obtained results with the results of calculations by the method of fundamental parameters, it is shown the necessity of using standard samples of sorbates to obtain correct results of RFA determination of selenium in the sorbent phase.

Nowadays x-ray fluorescence analysis is one of the major techniques for determination of trace elements. Vacuum operated Si (Li) .energy-dispersive x-ray spectrometers can analyze simultaneously up to 50 elements from Na (Z=11) to U (Z = 92) . Proper interpretation of the accumulated spectra requires correct solution of x-ray line overlap problems. In many cases knowledge of x-ray intensity ratios can make the procedure for resolving the overlapped peaks more reliable and reproducible. Measurements of radiative transition rates can also provide fundamental tests of theoretical atomic structure calculations. There are many other useful applications of x-ray emission rates in theoretical and experimental physics. On the other hand, there are differences in the published data, which suggests that x-ray intensity ratios are still not known with the necessary accuracy, and new measurements are useful and necessary.

A new approach to solving matrix problems in x-ray fluorescence analysis of trace elements has been applied to the determination of bromine in saline waters and zinc in silicates. The method requires no prior knowledge of the chemical composition of the sample. Marked matrix effects are minimized by dilution, and the problem of variable backgrounds due to residual matrix effects is solved by using a slope-ratio technique. In this proposed technique, the slope of a standard curve prepared from pure solutions is compared with that of spiked samples. The ratio of the slopes of these two curves permits the calculation of an adjusted background which does not significantly differ from that of an absorbent impregnated with the sample matrix free of the element sought. Experimental parameters concerning the technique are presented. The excellent agreement of the zinc and bromine data with analytical results obtained by more conventional methods suggests that the technique can be used for the determination of other trace constituents in geologic materials. Application of the slope-ratio technique to other modes of instrumental analysis appears feasible.

The article analyzes the factors affecting the longevity of insu-lating systems and the operational resistance of products based on mineral fibers. It is emphasized that the ratio of acid oxides contained in the charge to the main oxides is the main factor influencing the operational resistance of mineral fibers, as well as the energy intensity of their production. A hy-pothesis has been put forward and confirmed that the operational resistance of a fiber depends on the content of heavy metals (their oxides) in the ini-tial charge. Determination of the elemental composition of stone wool samples was carried out by X-ray fluorescence analysis. Conducted sam-ples with a different acidity module of the study, show, that the fibers are safe by radiation indices, and their operational resistance can be affected by heavy metal oxides. It is substantiated that the durability of building systems in which mineral wool products are used as thermal insulation is determined by the properties of mineral wool products, the literacy of de-sign solutions and the quality of installation. The properties of mineral wool products, including their operational resistance, depend on the prop-erties of mineral fibers and the observance of technological regimes both on the fact of the most complete curing of the binder and on the features of formation of the volume-oriented structure of the mineral wool carpet.

In multielement EDXRF analysis of very complex unknowns, some problems in data evaluation may be simplified if one can take into account a priori information on the properties of the incident and detected radiations, and also available data on the matrix of the sample. The number of variables can be drastically shortened in the LSM procedures in this case. One of the best examples of complex unknowns is the determination of the rare earth element content of ores, and most recently in samples of high temperature superconductors (HiTc).
