Gold nanorods (AuNRs) have the potential to be used in photoacoustic (PA) imaging and plasmonic photothermal therapy (PPTT) due to their unique optical properties, biocompatibility, controlled synthesis, and tuneable surface plasmon resonances (SPRs). Conventionally, continuous-wave (CW) lasers are used in PPTT partly due to their small size and low cost. However, if pulsed-wave (PW) lasers could be used to destroy tissue then combined theranostic applications, such as PA-guided PPTT, would be possible using the same laser system and AuNRs. In this study, we present the effects of AuNR size on PA response, PW-PPTT efficacy, and PA imaging in a tissue-mimicking phantom, as a necessary step in the development of AuNRs towards clinical use. At equivalent NP/mL, the PA signal intensity scaled with AuNR size, indicating that overall mass has an effect on PA response, and reinforcing the importance of efficient tumour targeting. Under PW illumination, all AuNRs showed toxicity at a laser fluence below the maximum permissible exposure to skin, with a maximum of 80% cell-death exhibited by the smallest AuNRs, strengthening the feasibility of PW-PPTT. The theranostic potential of PW lasers combined with AuNRs has been demonstrated for application in the lung.

High-quality gold nanorods (AuNRs) with a uniform aspect ratio and sizes are crucial for applications in biomedical or sensor industry. AuNRs is implementing Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance (LSPR) as sensing method which is highly dependent on the size, separation of nanoparticles, aspect ratio and the shape of the nanoparticles. Thus, in this process, the shape, surface density and aspect ratio of AuNRs were investigated to be used further as LSPR sensing material. The AuNRs was prepared using Seed Mediated Growth Method (SMGM) and the growth solution of the AuNRs was centrifuged with the speed ranging from 2500 rpm to 5000 rpm to separate the particles shaper prior to deposition as thin film. The XRD result shows the peak at 2θ = 38º which shows the (111) crystal orientation of the AuNRs. There are also two distinct peaks formed at the absorption spectra graph obtained from the UV-Vis result which associated with transverse plasmon peak (t-LSPR) and longitudinal plasmon peak (l-LSPR). The t-LSPR peak is significantly smaller than the l-LSPR and located in the wavelength ranges from 500 nm to 560 nm whereas the l-LSPR of the AuNRs shows a stronger and a higher peak which is located in the wavelength ranges from 700 nm to 780 nm. The morphological analysis using FESEM shows that the higher centrifugation speed separates the AuNRs with higher aspect ratio and higher surface density.

High aspect ratio (length/width) of hydroxyapatite (HA) nanorods were prepared by polymer assisted hydrothermal synthesis. The aspect ratio of the nanorods was increased in the presence of polymer in hydrothermal method. Structural analysis was carried out by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis to find the purity and the crystal structure of the material. Morphological analysis was carried out by field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) to find the morphological variation in the presence of polymer concentration compared to pristine HA. The increased aspect ratio of the HA was visible from the morphological analysis. This shape and size controlled synthesis have an important impact in many field of research.

AbstractWe describe a very simple, two-step synthetic method to prepare gold nanorods with extremely high aspect ratios (> 20) and average lengths of more than 1000 nm. The method is based on a seed-mediated growth in presence of the surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide. The length and aspect ratios of the nanorods can be manipulated by varying the surfactant concentration.
