The branching characteristics of the right coronary artery, acute marginal, posterior descending, left anterior descending, circumflex, and obtuse marginal arteries are compared with those of diagonal branches, left and right ventricular branches, septal, and higher-order branches, to test a newly proposed functional classification of the coronary arteries in which the first group rank as distributing vessels and the second as delivering vessels. According to this classification, the function of the first type is merely to convey blood to the borders of myocardial zones, while the function of the second is to implement the actual delivery of blood into these zones. This functional difference is important in the hemodynamic analysis of coronary heart disease, as it provides an assessment of the role of a vessel within the coronary network and hence an assessment of the functional importance of that vessel in a particular heart. Measurements from casts of human coronary arteries are used to examine the relevant characteristics of these vessels and hence to test the basis of this classification.

The role of endogenous adenosine during the β-adrenoceptor responses to isoprenaline of guinea-pig isolated cardiac preparations was examined. Insignificant effects of adenosine deaminase (0.3 U∙mL−1) on cumulative concentration–response curves for isoprenaline on isolated left and right atria and papillary muscles indicated a negligible depressant effect of endogenous adenosine during these responses. The increase in force of contraction to an infusion of isoprenaline (14 nM) in perfused spontaneously beating hearts rapidly waned while the infusion continued, whereas the increase in rate of contraction remained constant throughout the infusion. The degree of fade was less in paced preparations (5 Hz), indicating that it was only in part due to the rate increase exerting some mechanical constraint on the force of contraction. The P1-purinoceptor antagonist 8-phenyltheophylline (12 μM) and adenosine deaminase (0.3 U∙mL−1) did not enhance the peak responses to the isoprenaline infusion. The fade of the inotropic response in both spontaneous and paced hearts was also not attenuated by the presence of 8-phenyltheophylline or adenosine deaminase. The fade was not, therefore, due to release of endogenous adenosine exerting a depressant effect. Whether this declining inotropic response represents a form of rapid desensitization remains to be determined.Key words: guinea-pig perfused hearts, left and right atria, papillary muscles, β-adrenoceptor agonist, endogenous adenosine.

AbstractThe recent Olympic Games in London incited much interest in the competition of disabled athletes. Various people connected with swimming, including coaches and athletes, have speculated about the fairness of competitions of disabled athletes. A constant problem are the subjective methods of classification in disabled sport. Originally, athletes with disabilities were classified according to medical diagnosis. Due to the injustice which still affects the competitors, functional classification was created shortly after. In the present review, the authors show the anomalies in the structure of the classification. The presented discovery led to the suggestion to introduce objective methods, thanks to which it would be no longer necessary to rely on the subjective assessment of the classifier. According to the authors, while using objective methods does not completely rule out the possibility of fraud by disabled athletes in the classification process, it would certainly reduce their incidence. Some of the objective methods useful for the classification of disabled athletes are: posturography, evaluation of the muscle parameters, electrogoniometric assessment, surface electromyography, and analysis of kinematic parameters. These methods have provide objective evaluation in the diagnostic sense but only if they are used in tandem. The authors demonstrate the undeniable benefits of using objective methods. Unfortunately, there are not only advantages of such solution, there also several drawbacks to be found. The conclusion of the article is the statement by the authors that it is right to use objective methods which allow to further the most important rule in sport: fair-play.

AbstractMyocardium transcriptomes of left and right atria and ventricles from four adult male C57Bl/6j mice were profiled with Agilent microarrays to identify the differences responsible for the distinct functional roles of the four heart chambers. Female mice were not investigated owing to their transcriptome dependence on the estrous cycle phase. Out of the quantified 16,886 unigenes, 15.76% on the left side and 16.5% on the right side exhibited differential expression between the atrium and the ventricle, while 5.8% of genes were differently expressed between the two atria and only 1.2% between the two ventricles. The study revealed also chamber differences in gene expression control and coordination. We analyzed ion channels and transporters, and genes within the cardiac muscle contraction, oxidative phosphorylation, glycolysis/gluconeogenesis, calcium and adrenergic signaling pathways. Interestingly, while expression of Ank2 oscillates in phase with all 27 quantified binding partners in the left ventricle, the percentage of in-phase oscillating partners of Ank2 is 15% and 37% in the left and right atria and 74% in the right ventricle. The analysis indicated high interventricular synchrony of the ion channels expressions and the substantially lower synchrony between the two atria and between the atrium and the ventricle from the same side.
