AbstractWe analyse how immigrants’ level of social assimilation is related to their labour market outcomes. More precisely, we estimate the association between assimilation and employment, wages, underemployment, three measures of job satisfaction, overeducation and wages. Using Australian longitudinal data, we find that assimilation is strongly associated with employment and wages as well as a number of job satisfaction measures. We then split our data and repeat the analysis for before and after the financial crisis of 2008–2009. We find important differences in the way assimilation is associated with different measures of labour market outcomes under different economic conditions. Finally, we explore mechanisms that may underlie the results.

This article draws on longitudinal data to analyse restructuring in 11 EU member states in response to the 2008–2009 financial crisis. It finds that despite the dramatic crisis, restructuring regimes remained rather stable. New policies were adopted and existing policies were reformed, but changes were primarily within the existing regimes, though collectively agreed measures are important. However, in three countries, changes were more radical, indicating a shift in the dominant adjustment and governance mechanisms. These findings have implications for the understanding of how restructuring regimes change and how such changes may be studied, implying that restructuring policies cannot be evaluated in isolation. Any attempt to analyse the impact of restructuring policies on labour market outcomes must take account of the interplay of different policies and how their emphasis and character change over time.

This article examines labour market outcomes for teenagers and young adults before and after the global financial crisis. Using labour market activity calendar data, I analyse two cohorts of young people – a pre-global financial crisis cohort and a post-global financial crisis cohort – over the period from 2001 to 2016. A life course approach (sequence analysis) is used to track education-to-work transitions over this period. Optimal matching methods and cluster analysis are used to subdivide the cohorts into three distinctive categories. These form the basis for further analysis, including regression modelling. The key issue examined is whether labour market outcomes differed between these two cohorts, and, by extension, between the periods before and after the global financial crisis. In addition, the categorisation is used to examine issues of long-term marginalisation in the labour market. The main labour market outcomes analysed were gaining employment and conditions of employment, specifically underemployment and casualisation. The article concludes that gaining employment significantly deteriorated over this period. Furthermore, while the comparison of global financial crisis cohorts showed no significant differences when it came to underemployment and casualisation, this partly reflected the fact that both of these were already very high among this population of teenagers and young adults.

Abstract We show that cohorts of male graduates who start college during worse economic times earn higher average wages than those who start during better times. This is not explained by differences in selection into employment, economic conditions at graduation, or field of study choices. Graduates who enrol in bad times are not more positively selected based on their high-school outcomes, but they achieve higher college grades and earn higher wages conditional on their grades. Patterns for female graduates are similar, though less robust. Our results suggest that individuals who enrol during downturns exert more effort during their studies.

Technology plays a significant role in bridging gender gap in labour market outcomes. This paper investigates gender differential in broadband Internet usage and its effects on women‘s labour market participation. Employing an instrumental variable approach, findings suggest that exogenously determined high-speed broadband internet usage leads to increases of about 14.1 and 10.6 percentage points in labour market participation for single women and married women with some level of education, respectively. Moreover, further analyses suggest that married women are generally less likely to use the Internet to search for job opportunities and this could partly explains their low labour market participation rate. The findings suggest that more policy effort is required to bridge gender differentials in digital technologies and employment opportunities in South Africa.
