Ovarian Fibrothecoma are uncommon tumors of gonadal stromal cell origin accounting for 3-4% of all ovarian tumours. Ovarian fibrothecoma are composed of an admixture of fibrous and the comatous elements. The stromal cell tumors are probably the most inaccurately diagnosed tumor of the female gonad, clinically and histologically. Rarely benign tumours can present with elevated CA125. Here we discuss a rare presentation of Ovarian Fibrothecoma in a 52 years postmenopausal woman with large pelvic mass with ascites and elevated CA125 which we mistook for malignancy. Hence accurate diagnosis is more important before extensive surgical intervention.

Observations on gonad morphology and the structure of ovaries and testes of the coronate scyphozoans Atolla wyvillei and Periphylla periphylla are described based on samples collected from the Gulf of Mexico and Cape Hatteras (north-western Atlantic). In A. wyvillei, gonads of distinguishable sex were observed in medusae as small as 17 mm bell diameter (BD). Spermatogenesis occurred within follicles (average 366 × 254 μm) that were evenly distributed throughout the gonad. Oocytes in different stages of development were observed in all the females with gonads. Oocytes arise from the gastrodermis and migrate into the mesoglea to develop from early-mid to late vitellogenic oocytes characterized by a large nucleus and granular (organic-rich) cytoplasm. The largest oocytes measured were 543 μm and 263 μm from the Gulf of Mexico and Cape Hatteras respectively. Possible reasons for this difference are discussed. In P. periphylla gonads were also initially observed in medusae 17 mm BD, although not all larger medusae had obvious gonads. Unlike A. wyvillei sperm follicles were arranged in long convoluted rows normally only one follicle thick. The organization of ooytes in female P. periphylla was very similar to A. wyvillei, although the gonads were small and the number of oocytes present in each gonad very low (<22). The largest oocyte measured was 777 μm in a 53 mm BD medusa. Although medusae were collected from one time period only (September) in this study, our findings appear to be in agreement with literature evidence indicating that coronate jellyfish produce few eggs continuously over a long time period. Aspects of gonad development and gametogenesis are discussed with respect to potential differences in site productivity and species identification.

Abstract. The increasing CO2 concentration in the atmosphere caused by burning fossil fuels leads to increasing pCO2 and decreasing pH in the world ocean. These changes may have severe consequences for marine biota, especially in cold-water ecosystems due to higher solubility of CO2. However, studies on the response of mesozooplankton communities to elevated CO2 are still lacking. In order to test whether abundance and taxonomic composition change with pCO2, we have sampled nine mesocosms, which were deployed in Kongsfjorden, an Arctic fjord at Svalbard, and were adjusted to eight CO2 concentrations, initially ranging from 185 μatm to 1420 μatm. Vertical net hauls were taken weekly over about one month with an Apstein net (55 μm mesh size) in all mesocosms and the surrounding fjord. In addition, sediment trap samples, taken every second day in the mesocosms, were analysed to account for losses due to vertical migration and mortality. The taxonomic analysis revealed that meroplanktonic larvae (Cirripedia, Polychaeta, Bivalvia, Gastropoda, and Decapoda) dominated in the mesocosms while copepods (Calanus spp., Oithona similis, Acartia longiremis and Microsetella norvegica) were found in lower abundances. In the fjord copepods prevailed for most of our study. With time, abundance and taxonomic composition developed similarly in all mesocosms and the pCO2 had no significant effect on the overall community structure. Also, we did not find significant relationships between the pCO2 level and the abundance of single taxa. Changes in heterogeneous communities are, however, difficult to detect, and the exposure to elevated pCO2 was relatively short. We therefore suggest that future mesocosm experiments should be run for longer periods.

Impacts of different pH levels on different species of marine copepods, Calanoida copepod Schmackeria poplesia and Cyclopoida copepod Oithona similis were evaluated, and the alteration of key physiological processes of feeding and filtering were comparatively studies under controlled lab conditions. The optimal pH for O.similis and S.poplesia was 9.0 and 8.0 respectively, and they performed differently when exposed to different pH levels. For S. poplesia., the feeding and filtering rates increased steadily with the increment of pH at the range of 6.0~8.0, and reached the peak at pH 8.0. However, the rates decreased when pH was above 9.0. O.similis seemed more adaptive to the change of pH, and the increment was found in feeding and filtering rates at a range of 6.0~8.0. The maximus appeared at pH 9.0. compared to the other pH levels, the acidifying level of pH 6.0 presented the most obviously inhibition on feeding and filtering. Results in the present study would shed light on establishing the optimum culturing conditions for the cultivation of marine copepod.

<p>Tuna is one of the important fishery commodities in Indonesia, including tuna caught by longliners in Indian Ocean. The most popular of tuna is yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares). Currently, the production of tuna based on the capture fisheries, therefore, in order to preserve its sustainability, the understanding of the biological and reproduction aspect is required. Research on the biological reproduction of this species was conducted at Gondol Research Institute for Mariculture. Samples of female gonad were collected from Indian Ocean tuna longliners during April to July 2009 from the processing companies within Benoa Port. Result of the histological analysis on 128 female gonads showed that majority of gonads were at the early development level and the only 16 gonads have reached at the mature level. The analysis of the oocyte development showed the asynchronous, indicating that yellowfin tuna is a multiple spawner.</p><p>Keywords: yellowfin tuna, gonad, asynchronous</p>
